Is it just me, or is anyone else really looking forward to this film? I remember the old series I watched when I was smaller! Loved it. Hopefully this onje will be better than Lord of the Rings!

I doubt it, it is on a smaller scale and the book it is based on doesn't have the same depth.

I read somewhere that it's chock full of Christian allegory.

I've read both, and althopugu LOTR is a far more expansive book, narnia I think is much more doable on screen, without missing much. Never heard the christain bits before...

Gosh, is it? A messiah figure who dies in order to pay for the sins of another and who is then resurrected afterwards? Give over!

It is far more doable on the screen, but it is a children’s book, while LOTR is far deeper.

I better comparison would be if they made a film of the Hobbit which is aimed at a similar age range.

I'm just warning that though I think Narnia will be very good I don't think it will reach the same heights as LOTR.

Anyone know if they're doing all the books or just book 1? Perhaps it's dependent on how this one goes...

C S Lewis was a very commited Christian and all his books have very heavy Christian undercurrents. The Narnia books are indeed stuffed with them, with the most blatant being the aforementioned death-absolution-resurrection thing. The Perelandra sci-fi trilogy are equally heavy on that (although still very good reads) and the Screwtape Letters very obviously so too (being the imaginary letters between a senior devil to a junior one on how to successfully bring souls to damnation).

Spot who was brought up by Christian parents and was given plenty of Lewis to read as a lad.

I will say this though - they are very good books despite the religious undertones, although I haven't read them for years so this may be a case of rose(ary?) coloured spectacles.

There are plans to do all of them, depending on how this one does of course.

The problem the film makers might have that not all of the sequals were of equal quality.

tLtW&tW is actually book 2

I'm looking forward to it, the Narnia books (all seven of them) were the first real pieces of proper 'reading' I did, around the ages of 9-10 I think....

I hope they don't feel pressured by PC to remove some of the religious references, particularly the rather unfavourable attitude in The Horse and His Boy towards Turks

LW&TW is book 2, 'The magicians nephew' is book 1.
I've the read the chronicles of Narnia many times when i was young, but i don't think i'll see the film...it ruins the image of the story in your imagination.

Depends on whether you read them in order of Narnia's chronology or the order in which they were written. Magician's Nephew was a prequel written later on.

i've just commited the cardinal sin of revisiting a book from your childhood.
i loved all the narnia books as a kid, and have fond memories of them, but then on an impulse buy in tesco's the other day i picked up the lion the witch and the wardrobe.
its still not a bad read, but quite childish in tone (its definately a childrens book), and i was suprised how short it was!

so i'll not be digging out my old biggles books then, for fear of more disappointment (although i did still enjoy my old arthur ransome books a couple of years ago)!

Back when I was a student I visited the church in Oxford where CS Lewis is buried. We paid our respects at the grave and then sat in the porch (or whatever the proper name for it is) of the church within sight of the grave and someone read aloud the resurrection bit from tLtWatW. It was quite moving actually.

Very long 9 minute trailer for it here:

Jonathan Ross was none too complementary about it last night though.
