Why Ohhhh why ???on a busy motor way (M1 / M6 this morning) , with a little fog do people put their fog lights on?

Then in 10 seconds out to bright sunshine and fog lights stay on ?? Is it because people feel that they have to push the button?

Its a busy motor way, in a queue of traffic, I can see you

Yep gets me as well. If I can see the car 10 cars up in the queue doing 5 mph why does the twonk ahead of me have his fog light on!!!! Does he think I might suddenly and unexpectedly forget he's there...

In a lot of cars to have your front fogs on and look "cool" means the rear comes on as well...

I was there (M6/M1), and following an X-Type driven by a middle-aged man for ages, unable to tell when he was braking without consciously LOOKING at his rear lights.

Numpty!!!

Rear fogs are worse. Front fogs don't seem to dazzle but I suport any crack-down that is going to impact on Chavs.

Hurah! Now lets see the other police forces do the same. When riding my motorcycle in slight drizzle, both front and rear fog logs do a great job of producing intense diffraction patterns via the water droplets on the visor. Really annoying, quite dangerous and totally unnecessary!

Hurrah! But as that story was from 2001 is the crackdown still ongoing??

Two things arise:

1. I hope so!
2. I'll drink my coffee before posting in the AM.

More than likely the reason why a biker friend of mine is no longer with us!
I've been banging on about the effect fog lights have on bikers for ages now.
The fog light issue has been argued here many times before, don't really know why as IMO the use of them is common sense.
Very pleased to read that the BIB are planning do to something about it though.
Disturbingly, I've noticed that the dumb habit off driving around with fog lights on has spread to elderly drivers, not chavs or boy racers but retired folk in Civics etc. Maybe they think It's a safety feature?

I agree but would go further; in my experience (a million miles and ten years of which were at 50,000 per year) I have never been in a situation where rear fogs would have added anything to safety and would in most have been negative in their effect. Ban the bloody things altogether. (dives for cover)

I agree, I'ved put my fog lights on maybe twice in my entire driving career. Maybe cars should be limited to 20mph if you have fog lights on?

I don't like the use of the word 'ban' but I totally agree this time.

Sorry to hear that!

Do others think this is fair or too harsh and that I should be more discretionary?[/quote]

Not too harsh. I've had too many "Oh sh1t I can't see!" moments on B roads on dark damp nights.

I think a stern ticking off might be a better approach. Fixed penalties IMHO breed resentment against the Police.

Was behind a car yesterday on the motorway, when suddenly, the visibility dropped from 5 miles, to 1 mile. A very slight air mist not at ground level caused numpty to put his/her rear fog lights on.

It was a 54 reg, so the owner probably just likes playing with gadgets.

I tend to agree about FPN's, but hopefully the BiB concerned will be able to "tick off" the obvious clueless ones & ticket the "makes my car look like a Lemans racer brigade".
Word needs to get around that you could get a ticket for this offence, then perhaps it will be less common.
The press don't help either, how many pics. do you see with the cars head & fog lights on.

I think that is being very soft.

Anyone using rear fog lamps should have their vehicles crushed at nearest scrap yard.
