If I was to spend say 55k on a 355 Spider or 70k on a 360 Coupe - which would be the most expensive to run over say 18 months? with say 12k miles max in that period.

I would buy one with a warrenty but what should I watch for and has anyone purchased from Verdi before?

Cheers for all your help

Its got to be a 360. Whilst a I've always liked the 355, its starting to show its age now (IMHO).

Probably not a lot in it over running costs. The 360 has a cheaper belt service, but the clutches are more expensive so it balances out over time.

Depreciation will probably be a bigger factor than running costs. Values are still on the move a little due to the 430 introduction.

Personally, I would go for a manual trans 360 (with recent clutch and belts) if funds permit.

Verdi's has an excellent reputation amongst the Ferrari community. Though I didn't end up buying from there, I got a good impression during my visit.

Chris.

Chris - interesting you say that, myself & turboguru both "worked from home" today & went looking at 360's & 355's (he is interested in the latter & me the former)
We went over to Verdi's & when we couldn't find the showroom we stopped at what can only be described as a Ferrari bomb site, bits of cars lying around, 360's etc with the front ends off having work done, all outside what looked like a run down cut & shut shop.
We enquired & was told that "this is it" no showroom, and the sales guy was out but they could get him back if we wanted. Only a few cars around & the others advertised on their website were in storage somewhere & could be brought over.

All in all very unimpressed, so we made a quick exit.

The place really looked like a run down, dodgy, back street body shop & if thats "Verdi" then I cannot believe anyone buys a car from them, let alone a 70/80/90k Ferrari.

Haha! That's Karl's place.Look beyond the slightly ramshackle appearence and what you'll get is one of the best Ferrari engineers in the biz. It's always best to phone to make sure the car's displayed on the website are at the shop. A lot of them are SOR and will be with their owners.

Glad you made good use of your day off, sorry I mean 'day working from home'..

I am not surprised that the premises put you off; he really hasn't got enough room there. I am sure a call first would have ensured that Karl and the car would have been ready for your visit. I suppose the independents can charge less for work purely because they don’t have the overheads of the main dealers (big showroom, sharp suits..).

My company car is serviced at a beautiful glass building, free coffee, comfy chairs, loads of room. Always comes back worse than when it went in, and a jumbo bill to the lease company.. Maybe the same reason lots of Ferrari owners end up at respected independants (even if some lack the bling factor).

I suggest a good search of ferrarichat.com UK section. There are a few threads on good and bad dealers.

That's the place

Appearances can be deceptive. Most dealerships are all "fur coat and no knickers" - Verdi is more a diamond in the rough

Yep Karl needs larger premises, but he is a very stright up guy. Service at his place is consistently better than at a main dealers (e.g. he'd never 'forget' to put oil in your car during an oil change FFS like one dealer did to me once!)

You can also be pretty damn sure that if you're buying a car from Verdi it will be in damn good nick. I know several people who buy from main dealers who insist on Karl doing an inspection on their main dealer car before they buy it. He is a good guy and runs a decent business, ok it doesn't look posh - but then Karl doesn't charge you extra to pay for the new cappuccino machine or marble tiles in a showroom...

Yep, appearances deceptive at Verdi's. Look in this weeks Autocar - their feature on buying a 456/Bentley GT. Sourced their feature car from Karl. He is no nonsense and I believe he has just bought another premises on that estate to use as a showroom. His storage facilities are a 5 minute walk from the workshop.

He is highly regarded as an engineer, and I know he does quite a bit of work for main agents and a lot of work puting right what other "specialists" have cocked up.

Bit unnecessary that particular comment

As for the rest, yes, you could easily be put off by first impressions but don't let that put you off or you'll miss out. The cars in storage aren't a million miles away either so they can whip them round there given notice.

As mentioned below Autocar value Verdi's opinions on 'rarris and frequenty seek comment from Karl.

That Ferrari bomb site has always done great, well priced work on my 355. Wouldn't go anywhere else.

I stand corrected, I was coming from a no experience / first impression basis & it wasn't great at all.
I wonder how much business they lose as a result, because if I was buying a car yesterday I would have bought elsewhere, unaware how good they actually are, and without boards like this I wouldn't have given them a second chance, which I now will.

I will also give them another try in that case, are their warrenties any good?

cheers again guys, good to hear from people that have purchased there before. Myself and Rump had a bad experience once with a Porsche Independant which makes us just extra cautious with them.

Cheers

I believe the warranties obtained through Verdi are not their own, but Karl has a very good reputation with the warranty companies and will usually give the go ahead on Karl's advice. IIRC they are about £1200 per year for most F-cars.
