Squeaking noise from nearside front wheel

As per the title, I noticed this on the motorway this morning - it seemed to be activated by braking and then went on a bit longer when I'd released the brakes. There wasn't really anything noticable at lower speeds.
A couple of things that have happened recently that may be related:
Sunday - PHer roadsweeper pointed out a copper colour effect on the brake disks of both nearside wheels that wasn't present on the offside, but just had a look now and can't see any of it.
Tuesday morning - hit a pothole on the nearside front with a massive thud, will try and get back to the scene for photos in case this is the cause.
Any help much appreciated, am a little concerned at this point.

Hence I got them changed sharpish.Two options then really:
1) Risk it for my 50 mile journey home along the M56, and try and get it looked at tomorrow.
2) Call out Green Flag and get them to take a look at it. If they don't think it's driveable then get it (and me) transported home. Only thing that worries me about that is they won't have a clue and will tell me wrong or not tell me anything for fear of incriminating himself.

I drove 250 miles like it, because I thought it was probably a suspension bush or something. It was only when I got it serviced the next day that they told me, and showed me what they were like! I could not believe it.
I have been working on normal euroboxes for about 12 years, and changed many a brake pad, but never seen anything like it before.
If your car has done low mileage, hence the pads are the original, or been on a long time, then I suspect it could be the same as mine.
P.S Is your car Imperial blue too? Best colour, but I am biased.

If you feel any vibration through the steering, or any change to the way the car normally handles, stop immediately and get it recovered. If the brakes don't feel quite right or you get vibration through the pedal, assume that your brakes could stop working at any moment and pull over as soon as you can.
If you just get an unusual noise and nothing else out of the ordinary then it *might* be some hugely catastrophic fault but far more likely it's just brake squeal. This might be because the pads have just got to the critical depth, of exactly the right amount of dirt has built up on the caliper, or just the wrong day of the month. If it was me I'd check the brakes over to check for wear, give the wheels a bit of a wobble and generally look for anything unusual, but I wouldn't worry unduly about it.

OK, just spoke to Shane at SFR and I'm going to take it in for him to have a look on Saturday morning.
As for getting home, I'm going to set off early and take it easy while I closely monitor steering/brakes/handling etc. Thanks for the info, it's very helpful to be able know what to look and listen for and if I spot any of the symptoms I'll get the recovery guys out.
