Looking for an upgrade from my Exige S2 (Graphite grey if anyone interested!).

Would have up to around £40k to spend and as I tend to change cars once a year looking for good depreciation protection.

Thanks

If you want good depreciation protection, you may need to look at a 2-years+ example as they seem to plummet in value during that period.

Also build in higher running costs than your Exige.

Depreciations not the whole story though, running costs are relevant so what you save on depreciation with an older car you may make up on keeping it running.

the exige has cost me about £1600 this last 12 months (pads, discs, service, A048s)

Depending on how your numbers come up, the noble could cost a fair chunk more than this to run for a year. All the wear parts cost more per unit and its a more complex car so more to go wrong. I'm presuming you anticipate this?

If you track the noble more than once or twice, you'll going to be well over that sort of money.

As Dan says, the Noble is a £55k car, and hence bills will be similarly pro-rated.

To give you an idea, here are some rough costs for, say, 6-8 track days in a year and 6000 miles

New Pads and Discs all round - £1k
2 x new pads - £300
2 x Rear SO3's - £700
Servicing - say £800k (one full service and two oil changes)
Total: £2800

Not triple or quadruple your Exige, but quite a bit higher.

Of course, if you just drive around an pose (where's Rob when you need him ) then the costs won't be anything like that.

I'm not sure its quite that much!

Your figures do illustrate how much more it costs than an Exige though, and thats assuming nothing else needs sorting. e.g. you could get caught out needing a new lambda sensor, or wheel sensor, or gaskets etc. All of which can cost a fair chunk to if you are out of warranty.

The car before the exige was a caterham Superlight R. I managed to 'invest' well over £10k on that in its first year. I think the major cost difference between the noble and the exige is probably the servicing cost. That looks pricey.

I live 4 miles from Vegantune in Elstree/Bwood, which could end up being expensive!

Are there any pressure points or 'things that need doing to be safe' at any particular age or mileage in a 3R? Or any must have upgrades (e.g. the guy I know with an early M12 had such a bad rear hub that the wheel used to wobble and rub against the arch! Not very confidence inspiring.).

I would anticipate tracking it at Bedford a fair amount, maybe up to 1 event per month.

...good point about warranty. Can you get extended warranties? Highly unlikely I suspect and not something I am used to in any event.

For what you're looking at you might be best off with a 2.5 or 3 with... Track day sump(the only real essential), Solid brake line and pedal upgrade, FP intercooler and Bov, and nitron or ohlin damper upgrades. Should be able to get all that and a year or so's hammering budget from your target price ?

heat soak does seem to be an issue, or is that just with earlier cars?

No they all get it. The FP intercooler upgades sorts it 100% though.

£600ish for the full service, £100 for the oil change if you don't want mucky hands (8l of oil costs £60 of that....)

Tracking Nobles puts enourmous strain on the suspension components.

Early cars suffered from weak ball joints (£3 each, £11 for the new 'hard man' ones, +fitting), and the rear hub nut can come loose (replace around £15). Apart from that, everything else is pretty solid.

As with most cars, look for the latest version that your money will buy you, get it checked by a service centre/dealer before you buy it, and ensure you have a track day sump.

Apart from that, the choice is all yours.

£800k is rather more than £600

Undeniably £800 is more than £600 - but Joust included 2 additional oil changes (required with heavy tracking) under the Servicing banner (ie 600+(2x100)=800), which is about right for us nonces who don't want to get our mitts oily.
