This has happened on 4 occassions now. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. A couple of times I've been on the motorway and a couple of times in traffic. I'll be driving along perfectly happy, then without warning the power from the engine will fade and sound all lumpy. Pull over - engine off - restart engine and everthing is absolutely fine again!? Apart from these little episodes the car is driving absolutey flawlessly. Anyone had simular? BTW he's a 1995 4.0 chim.

Yes. Tried all sorts of things, most recently cleaning the multi-pin ECU connector, which seems to have done the trick (until the next time)...

Lots of possible causes, but from the immediate restart I'd be inclined to suspect the fuel pump relay.

Also check stepper motor is clean. I had a similar issue and after cleaning the stepper motor (how come it ws filthy after a main dealer full service?) have had no problems since. Also 95 4.0.

I'm having a similar problem which has become worse now the weather's got colder. On occasion the engine just will not idle without a little throttle, but is fine while driving. In the autumn this went on throughout a 250-mile drive. After switching off the ignition for a moment the problem went away. But during the journey I restarted the car several times without turning the ignition off first. As the weather's become colder it has happened more often. I can only assume it's a sensor connected to the ECU whose state is only read at power-on.
