My bike just failed its MoT test this morning. nothing much but very irritating. I bought myself a used big fat cruiser as a birthday pressi, I asked all the right questions, so I thought. No its not imported, I was told it was a UK registered bike and shown the V5. It had custom pipes on but I was told they were road legal pipes, not stamped stating 'do not use on the road'. a year on at this mornings test, first off the light dips the wrong way. Yes its an import, the pipes are to loud and not legal, what gets me was the dealer selling the bike gave it a MOT cert before I bought it. Do I have a go because he lied to me or tell the ministry he hands out duff certificates. Other than that the bike looks and rides great. I would go punch his lights out but cant be bothered to ride that far now. Tomorrow will be spent searching breakers websites for a UK lamp.

No question phone VOSA and explane the situation. Clearly the dealer is a con man and deserves all he gets.

I ******* hate it when dealers (car or bike) take the piss out of people and think they are smart.

I would go back to the dealer, explain that it has failed the MOT, explain you want the lights and exhaust changed (or the money to do that) and once it has passed it's 2nd MOT..... I would then shop him. Don't do it until the bike is sorted!!

Hey Degz, how you doing matey?
Sorry to hear of your hassle..i actually bought an import 750 recently, with assurances that all is UK sorted. I think i'll double check now.
If i were you, i'd get it back to them toot sweet, why should you be out of pocket!!
Didn't obtain 'said bike' from somewhere in the west country did you?
No name & shame..as stated above though..

200 still purring? The 400 had £2500 spent on it, then i tucked into my garage where it's been ever since...doh.

That sort of deafeats the object - the complaint here is due to friendly testers!
Speak with the bike shop - demand it sorting and money off - import cheaper than UK bike?
Then go to the Ministry!

and be prepared to show a photocopy of the fail cert and if necessary threaten to take the evidence to MOT.

Yes I agree with you (was being sarcy), the bike should be right from new as it was sold as a 'UK' model - fit for purpose and all that.

I bought my bike as an 'import' it had KPH speedo/wrong side dip, the shop I bought it from put an overlay sticker on the speedo and a beam deflector sticker on the headlight to conform with the law, which might seem cheap but I got a very good deal on the bike and was happy to accept this - I modified the headlight dip by making a new beam deflector plate (mirror image of original) which only cost my time, I used the KPH speedo for few years (really didn't bother me and it's not hard to know what 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 3pts + £60, Magistrates court and 'Go directly to jail' are in KPH) and no MOT tester even mentioned it, but I recently found a cheap one off fleabay so now it's in MPH.

The 'friendly' testers are good for when you've fitted the race pipe yourself and don't want the bother of changing/changing back.....

Thanks for your efforts. I will approach the original dealer, but dont expect much luck, as someone mentioned import are cheaper, I paid good UK market value. The loud pipes are nearly sorted, put some extra wadding on baffles and tester said he will only give me a warning if they are still to loud (friendly dealer). He would also let me put tape on the headlamp for the test. but thats not the point. The Bast'rd lied to me and put papers under my nose to prove his point to get a sale.
Wanster Hi, 200's taking a short break because of the ice, strange I still ride the bike in the wet/frost.
