Guys, I've been trying to sell my immaculate 996 without much success, pressure upon the used market from the swop to 997 is obvious but I'd no real takers so decided to trade it against a my new car only to find it's depreciated by 20% in 8 months since I bought it for £30k in March, whats going on?
Cheers

Why are you selling it after only 8 months, buyers will be suspicious

Supply and demand - there are stacks and stacks and stacks of used 996s out there. It's unfortunately a buyer's market. Autotrader lists two 1998 996s - a high miler 112k for a mere £19995 and a 71k mile one for £22K...Many more will be under £20k next year. Friend just got £24k for his 50k miles 1999 996 traded in against a M5...

But £24K is still probably about 40% of the cost when brought new for a car which is now 6 years old. An average of 7.5% depreciation per annum seems pretty good to me.

you either overpaid for it in March or its a horrible spec..what are the details. Also if you bought if from a Trader then they would have had a 4k margin and most of this would be immediately lost in a trade sale..

Thanks for the responses guys, a few answers.
Selling it since I changed jobs, relocated and now live at the base of the Cheviots which is great but spend 40 mins every morning and an hour every evening sitting nose to tail on the A1 trying to get across the Tyne (it's a Northern thing guys!)
The spec is silver with full black ruffled plus some nice extras like heated seats, 6cd, climate, computer and the car overall is spotless, full OPC history and 67k miles. Just wish I could afford to keep it and buy something to commute with.
Cheers

at a guess (and this is a personal opinion):

1. ruffled leather is a big no-no for me

2. that seems very low spec which might put others off vs similar cars at similar prices -
climate is std and so is computer (at least in later cars) so the only options are metalllic, bum warmers and 6CD? ie no wheel upgrade, no PCM, no speaker upgrade etc

My solution - find a more enjoyable, scenic route to work. It may be 10 miles longer, bu tif it still takes the same time you'll have loads more fun in the 996 and keep it as your daily driver!

Problem solved!

Re: 20% drop in 8 monhts - did you buy it from a dealer? If so, th e20% drop is mainly their margin between their buy and sell price.

Keep it - you'll just kick yourself everytime you sit in traffic in another, lesser car and you'll 'save' £6k.

Mileage is quite high for a 911 as well - it seems that they are very mileage sensitive in the market.

There is also a pretty large discount on pre-facelifted ones which I think is understandable.

Just saw the car for sale on this site-its the wheels and miles that are doing it...Get some wheels from Jasmine and organise a warranty from Porsche and you are in with a fighting chance...

My 10p steve.
Drop the price to 22995 then take it from there, its not going to be an easy sell regardless.
If thats to painfull,as suggested buy a set of wheels and hold out till spring, keep the miles down then try it again at 24k

Speak to Joel at RSJ-if you can spare the car then he does sale or return-saying that, he will be nervous about the wheels as well I expect. He has a similar age and miles car but with 18" alloys for £27,995
