You have to bear in mind who is voting...and that fact that most of the competition is rubbish also.

Teen band tastic mainly, save for a few exceptions, Westlife, McFly etc etc. Bands such as Athlete weren't even in the final ten.

It's not even an original work. What's worse is that it is absolutely identical to the Josh Groban version. Westlife didn't even make it sound original.

The band and the song are utter dross, so of course it won!

Yes but if you know it is dross (I agree with you) then you must have watched it, so unless you are a kid then yes other people do (including me and I am 34)

Nope, didn't watch it! Come on, a singles of the year show, primetime on a saturday night in winter with boy bands on - what else is it going to be other than dross!?

I don't need the music industry telling me what to listen to thanks, I can make my own decisions

The popular music industry has been dominated by kiddy-friendly manufactured commercial tat for years. Most singles are bought by children and young teens, hence the 'charts' consist of the aforementioned $hite. Recent 'proper' bands like Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers etc don't get a look in because fans are mainly adults and will buy the album either on CD or online. If you are a heavy rock band, forget mainstream commercial exposure: anyone remember when Maiden were at No1 with 'Bring your Daughter (To the Slaughter)'?? It was played on ToTP because they had to, and was always faded out about 2 mins in before the guitar solo started...

Old b@stards like me will remember when 'chart' pop bands were the likes of Duran Duran, Ultravox, The Police etc. They actually wrote their own songs and played instruments! Gasp!
