I remember seeing a program about squid - not the giant ones, but still a decent size - they were positively vicious, and the fisherman all said they'd rather be amongst a group of sharks than a swarm of squid.

One of the Sea worlds in America was losing Sharks over night. It turned out that the Octopus were catching, and eating them.

That's a juvenile - you can see through it's dorsal fin. I would say that shark is a foot long, maybe 18 inches.

These be those buggers.....

Humboldt squid, they grow up to 6 or 7 feet long and tend to hand around in packs..
As you rightly say - the fishermen and people generally in the know give these fellas a wide birth as they have a fearsome reputation. This is partly due to their very high intelligence and insatiable curiosity.

However they are fished… using 12 inch long needle sharp jigs - a bit like a thin hypodermic steel pine cone. Once they get hold of them they are pulled up to the surface with the things embedded in them.

Experts reckon this practice could possibly piss them off a bit!
Hence the temper ??

Back home you always had to be careful of the blue ringed octopus, (those who have read State of Fear by Michael Critchon will know about it ) tiny little things (golf ball sized) but one wrong step in a rockpool or walking in shallow water on the beach and it gets really pissed off, bites you and then you start to get slowly paralysed unless you can get to a hospital very quickly you will die.
