Does anyone here use one for motorsport?, just wondering if its long enough for the job, 400 and 500 prices a bit scary

I think you'll find the most common long lens here is the 100-400L IS. A sample...

I suspect the camera you put it on makes a difference too, esp in terms of focus speed and tracking accuracy.

I have a 100-400, but am concerned about its weather protection (and its Dyson like habits)

Shot above is with a 20D, though it doesn't seem any different/faster on the 1D2N.

I've used the 300f4 which was good but only useful for certain types of shots. most people I have seen at tracks use a 500 f4 plus a 70-200 both may have teleconverters too

Countless Pro Motorsport shooters use the 300 f2.8 (IS). It works like a dream with the 1.4x Extender too..

Not cheap though !

Yep. It's a great (albeit large, heavy and expensive) lens, but whether it's long enough really depends on how close you can get, and what sort of shots you want.

It also works very well with the 1.4x and 2x TCs, so you can get a 420mm f4 and 600mm f5.6 lens out of it too.

I hardly ever use the 100-400 if I have the 300 with me, but it's size and weight does mean it gets left at home sometimes.

I've just finished processing a bunch of Goodwood shots that I took with it, so will get these posted tomorrow hopefully.

Thats what I wanted to hear, I've been looking at s/h non IS models as well as new IS, I shoot mainly off a tripod with a fluid head so either would do. I have a Japanese client that could bring me one over for around 2k, would warranty be an issue? ( I've heard about Canon worldwide warranty, is there such a thing? )

Canon do local (regional) warranties on bodies, but do global warranties on lenses - good news for you!!!

More than one of us here run the Sigma 120-300 F2.8. No IS ( but do you really need it for motorsport ) and cheap(ish) @ £1700. Being able to zoom out saves having 2 bodies running to cover the gravel shots

I'm not to worried about IS as I use a tripod, I was going to keep the 100-400 on the 20d (hand held with IS), and the 300 on the 1d, 100-400mm on the 20d is 160-640mm, should cover most areas of kitty litter

I use one with the 1D MKII for circuit motorsport and it works excelently with the 1.4 & 2x convertors, I work mainly at Croft and sometimes Oulton park and being trackside gives me enough reach, I would say amongst the motorsport photographers that I work with it is the most popular lens.

Here are a few examples shot with it

Cheers

Thanks Ian, your photo's are all the proof I needed, new lens should be with me early Feb, that should give me time to practice before the season starts

Yes it's on fire either that or he has some type of new orange neons fitted He was qualifying at the time so didn't let such a small thing as an engine fire slow him down

Spoke to Canon today about warranties, they only honour the world wide warranty if you have proof that you purchased the lens while abroard, ie being the first owner, that combined with the fact the lens would have to come over in the planes belly (something to do with the size of the box!!) has prompted me to once again get shafted for living in the uk.......it arrives tomorrow
