Although I am very doubtful I will get it, I have just applied for a p/t job working in a prison library. The money and hours are good, but my grandad said someone he knew worked in a prison and it was clanging doors everytime you moved - that prison is a cat A/B prison, while the one I have applied for is a cat C/D where the inmates can work or attend college during the day.

ANyone have any experience of working in a prison?

Yes.

1 Year in Holme House. Not a nice place and some seriously nasty people, specially in the Sex Offender wing.

Never again. I'd rather be out of work.

Hope i haven't put you off

Strangely it was Holme House my grandad was refering to, I have applied for Kirklevington. Apparently they use it as a 're-settlement' prison or something, they bring prisoners back to their local area and prepare them for the outside work by training them and lettin them work in the hope it will lesson their chances of re-offending.

My 2nd cousin worked in a prison for most of his life, somewhere in london, he seemed to get on fine with it but I think it was a lower category prision so that may be why.

My friend worked in a prison for some time with lifers. She is an actress and she did drama workshops with them. She found it very enjoyable and rewarding and found them a lot more pleasant than many 16 and 17 year olds Seriously, best of luck!
