The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has rubber-stamped the governing body’s plans to “drastically reduce the cost of competing” in Formula 1 and to “make it easier to overtake without increasing cornering speeds”.

At a meeting in Monaco today, the council agreed the basis of the 2008 technical regulations, which will be finalised later this month.

The new rules package will include the following:

* A standard electronic control unit (ECU)
* Long-life engines
* Long-life gearboxes
* A single tyre supplier
* Restrictions on the ability of the teams to change their aerodynamics during the season
* Rev-limited engines

Most of these changes have been on the table for some time, but confirmation of the fine details is eagerly awaited by teams and fans alike.

It is hoped that the standard ECU, a device that engine manufacturers have previously been wary of, will allow the eradication of driver aids such as traction control, by removing fears that electronic trickery cannot be effectively policed.

The restrictions on aero development will also be a substantial change to the F1 ethos.

At present, top teams introduce new parts at virtually every race, and many make substantial aero upgrades during the season.

Other proposals will come as less of a culture shock.

The staged introduction of long -life engine rules has already begun, with teams having to make each engine last two races from 2005.

The impending switch to a single tyre supplier has long been taken for granted, with Michelin likely to withdraw before 2008 due to its objection to this principle.

More radical changes - such as the CDG wing proposal - were not mentioned in today's announcement, but are likely to be discussed before the 2008 package is finalised.

looks like i wont be watching it from then. F1 is supposed to be the top level, progress thats always on the move, what every race driver would dream of doing.
so why make it into a controlled formula like every other.
hmmm, what do i watch, F1, or renault world series thats just as quick and just as technologically advanced? and sometimes gives better racing?

i wish they would stop fudging around with F1, stop trying to change so many things, limit this that the other. thats whats really costing teams money.

As a columnist in Autosport recently wrote, don't fool yourself into thinking that Adrian Newey and Rory Byrne are influential Formula One designers. By far the most influential designer is Max Mosley.

There are plenty of rigidly-enforced single-make formulae in motorsport already. I don't see why we have to make Formula 1 yet another of them.

So that's what Max wants - I wonder what he'll be prepared to trade - aero mods in return for accepting a standard ECU I reckon, but the rest is not that contentious

No restriction on the number of cup holders the manufacturers can fit?

You see, Max hasn't thought of everything.

Are the FIA going to merge the brands and force all the F1's to take the EuroNCAP safety test? Could be a good one. If you fail the pedestrian safety requirements with worse than 3 stars you are disqualified from 2 races, or something like that.

Or maybe they are predicting that large wallet sponsors will be hard to find by 2008 and the new rules will at least appear to ensure that no single team will be able to gain an unbeatable advantage using a large budget unavailable to the others.

But if they wanted to do that, why not just rotate through a series of proven one make concepts? World Series one year, A1 GP spec the next, GP2 another year and so on. Might keep the manufacturers happy that way.

All very puzzling.

I wish they would relax some of the regulations, and give the designers some scope to come up with different designs, and results from different technologies.

How many of these plans will still be around when 2008 finally arrives?
