Road Angel, Snooper or Origin?
Discussion
Origin - every time. It is a brilliant unit. Comes with a laser detector and looks really good fitted. You can also put in the new radar detector which operates with the GPS detector to stop all those falce readings.
The only thing I would add (will add) is a laser diffiuser.
If you want one I can refer you and get some money off!

Hi,
I bought the B2 solo on recommendation from Gooby. Have been really impressed with it. I have had a few technical problems but Origin are always happy to help out. If they had put more detail on their website about the difference between the products i would probably have bought the standard B2 instead of the solo, as the solo (although smaller) can't work through a heated front screen which i have in my second car. Got around it by simply plugging in an external ariel tho which they sent me for free
It's dead easy to install, set-up & update and is smaller than the rest on the market. it has laser detector built in, but you can get radar & blocking bolt ons if you want. www.originb2.com/ will tell you more. I think Gooby is offering a good referal deal if you go through him too.

It's between the Road Angel 2 £299

And the Origin B2 £379

I like the fact the B2 senses your speed and warns you earlier if you're really going for it... I'm not sure if the Road Angel has this feature. I like the fact the Road Angel 2 is £80 cheaper though!

If it it is a money consideration then I can narrow the gap. I can refer you to origin and I get a referal fee of £100 quid. I will split this and give you £50. Therefore £50 quid cash back!
Send me an e-mail, I will refer you and if you like it and you think it is a good deal, when I get my check through I will split it with you. Everyone wins apart from the scamera partnerships.
What is the road angel subscription fee?
Also the B2 is portable and is very easy to put in your pocket when you leave the car and the instalation is descrete and subtle. No cable dragged across the dash (I hate that, makes it look chavy and like you have yanked the loom out the dash!)

gooby, am deffo interested in this but won't be until the New Year (expecting a cash injection then).
Can I ask a couple of Q's? I know you're a man who will have done his homework so perhaps you can indulge me for a moment as you may be able to save me a lot of reading and research...
a) What made you choose this over the Road Angel?
b) You note a question above about the subs fee for the RA - does the B2 have one?
c) Looks like a good unit, nice size whilst not being too small/large in either direction. You make a note about having no cables dragging across the dash. Do you just charge it at home then or is yours hard-wired?
Cheers!

It was really recommended by a guy I trust and the fact you never get a falce reading. If you are heading towards a camera that is pointing in the opposite direction and is not a threat, the B2 doesnt bother you. The datyabase is also very accurate and reliable. It will let you know if you havnt updated within 14 days and it gets everything, even temporary cameras in road works.
b) You note a question above about the subs fee for the RA - does the B2 have one?
Yep, they all do - the B2 is £50 per year. Not bad at all for a decent db that is very accurate.

It sits in a cradle that is mounted on the dash. I had mine fitted and it is very discrete. The only thing visable is the cradle and the b2. The gps detector is mounted behind the cradle and out of your field of view and the cabling is all nicely tucked inside the dash. The laser detector is placed behind the mirror so no one actually knows it is there and the cabling for the laser detector is tucked into the gap between the windscreen and the interior trim and completely hidden from view. The only thing I see and any passengers brave enough to get in is an extra screen to the right of the binicle that feeds me trap data. The data is also delivered very well a visable warning of 2 red flashing leds, the screen displays how far you are from the trap and the speed limit. It also show you how fast you are going. It will nag you untill you slow down and the trap is not a threat. There is also an audible warning, a voice tells you the type of trap and the speed limit.
The best bit about it is that if you are going to slow for the trap to be a threat it will tell you that the trap is there but not nag you to slow down. Basically it will only bother you if you need to be bothered
I have had 2 problems.
1) The unit kept on bouncing out of the cradle because of the sports car suspension. They supplied me with stronger magnets to hold the unit in. Free and easy
2) dropped it and broke the screen. It is being fixed free on warantee eventhough it is not a warentee fix and it is just out of warentee.
How is that for service?

Cheers gooby.
Sounds pretty good but getting it hardwired would be an @rse for me as I don't really want that. Does it run off a cig lighter socket or does it have an internal battery?
The one I have is the original B2 which you install the cradle and associated hardware and the unit itself lifts out of the cradle so you can take it with you. It only works in the cradle.
You can get a more mobile version (b2 solo) which cheekymonkey has. I dont know much about them, he will have to tell you about that.
Remember that the units that have a built in laser detector will not be very good. The laser detector has to be mounted as high as possible on a liz in order to benefit form any laser scatter from other vehicles. If it is mounted low down (on the unit) the effectivness of the laser detector is very low and more importantly it is far less reliable.
Also the B2 is modular you can put more fitting kits in other cars and just keep your unit with you and you can add on radar detectors etc.
Brilliant bit of kit and the only reason I still have a licence!
Had a look at the Micro Road Pilot?
Fantastic unit, very like the Origin B2 and has remote laser detection (so you can mount it near number plate).
I would have thought it the favorite for Elises due to its tiny size and weight.
normally around £300 or just over £150 on Ebay.
Also does mileage, speed, speed limit shown at camera sites, digital compass and bearing. Plus info such as altitude and a screen which shows if there are any tie-fighters overhead.

No worries Gooby - i'm not sure abotu brekkie this w/e as prob up to see Ms Cheekymonkey
Regards the solo, is is principly the same, but doesn't have a seperate antenna, it's built into the cradle so less wires!
It has 2 wires
1. to power - either cig lighter or hard wired if you prefer. I have left mine as ciggy for now but managed to hide the cables in the joins on the dash so you don't see it. I will hard wire when i have more time.
2. is the wire to the laser detector which i did the same as gooby and ran it round the windscreen in the trim gap, and fixed behind rear view mirror. I reckon it took me no more than 10 mins to hook it all up and hide cables.
you can remove the laser detector to add a laser blocker (garage door opener type thing
) and there is a spare port to add a radar detector as an optional extra
as gooby says it's a pretty simple to use bit of kit, doesn't give false alarms and you can change all the audio warnings dependant on your requirements... like bl**dy loud for lasers!!
it has only missed 2 scameras when i was in deepest darkest cornwall but these were temp cameras in roadworks, you simply press a button on the display which feeds this back to origin when you next update your database so they can distribute this out to other users

Another vote here for the Origin. I think the rate of updates for the database is the main thing that attracted me to the b2, and so far, it's been spot on.
My only slight quibble is that I am now on my third unit, as the first two both had problems with the internal speaker - the first was DOA, the second died after a few months. However, Origin swapped them out quickly and without fuss both times and gave me a free subscription extension by way of apology.
I don't care much for the laser detector though. I drove straight through a scamera van trap near Stoke whilst in a queue of traffic, and the laser alarm didn't go off (although it is installed in front of the rearview mirror, which to be fair isn't the best spot for it). However, bizarrely, if I sound the horn for about a second or more, it sets the laser alarm off. This has caused all sorts of entertainment on a couple of occasions!
