It struck me today, we'll soon be in the second half of the first decade of the new century. It seems just five minutes ago since we were celebrating the new millennium. Where the hell do all the years go?

Queens Siver whatyamacallit in 1977 did not seem that long ago. The scary thing I find is talking about some story that happened to me and find it was 15 years ago

The older you get, the faster the years go. I think it's because each year is not asscoiated with something new/memorable, like another year at school, Uni etc.

Booked your gliding yet Mr 64?

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say

years go faster as you age because each year is a smaller proportion of your life.

When the brain sees repetition it doesn't bother memorising it or at least compresses it like an MP3, so when you look back it's compacted. If lots of new stuff you never encountered or did before happens then it will seem like a lot longer. Like when you work a boring week at work, you look back and you remember nothing, well at least it went quick you think, but you go on holiday for a week travelling somewhere new with lots of stimuation for the brain all round and it seems like you packed a month into that week.

The trouble is we mostly live boring repetitive lives as we get older, whereas when we were younger everything was new and different, this is why childhood seems to take forever and adulthood goes in the blink of an eye.

So get out there and do something different before it's too late.

Its a perspective thing. When you are 5, a year is 20% of your life. A big deal, a long time. Get to 50 and a year is just 2% of your life. Blink. There goes another one.
