Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes:

Due to a plastic rear window, it can be pretty hard to see out the back at night. This is leading to paranoia about getting a pull, especially as plod might conclude poor observation, making potential predicament worse.

Has anyone tried rearward facing night vision systems? Was thinking camera monuted at rear coupled to screen rather than donning goggles, which would obviously be a bit Have considered making the passenger use night vision binoculars, but they'd get a stiff neck looking out the back every 7 seconds or so

If it could be made to work, it might be a bit more useful than my centre mirror at night...

Just remember to invert the image so that it looks the same as the mirror and I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

Or alternatively get a midget with a thick coat and a two-way radio and strap him to the boot looking backwards.

Nah, you'd let him off for toilet breaks every so often, can't say fairer than that.

I've tried it on a Range Rover and it's crap. The Vogue has 2 options one is the standard rear facing camera that displays on the screen on the dash when you select reverse and has a "night" mode, which is very poor and frankly I prefer the mirrors or looking over my shoulder. The other option is the "venture cam" they come with which is basically a little handheld bluetooth webcam like thingie with infra red led's round the lense and again a "night mode" this is mildly better than crap but still not worthy of even being on the option list, the dealer explained it's use as "it's handy to cable tie inside a horse box when you're towing then you can see if the horse falls over" actually it's only handy for looking up passengers skirts, and you normally get sussed as the image appears on screen. I'd say don't waste your time or money

In terms of paranoia visibility through the rear window is not a requirement - you just need to have two suitable rear facing mirrors (wing mirrors will suffice). All those lucky, lucky owners of assorted (mostly italian) exotica would be in deep trouble if you *had* to be able to see much of anything through the rear. What about vans without rear windows at all?

Just chill and enjoy the car

I think the paranoia is about not seeing plod and therefore getting a pull, rather than demonstrating adequate visibility afterwards.

Wow, I know those scamerati have been sneaky with their hiding places but jeez!

It is the fear of not seeing the persuing plod that is making me nervous. From Mel's advice though, it sounds like I'm not onto a winner with this idea.

Any one know where I can get a (cheap) midget from?

Why not just clean your rear window - plently of very good products avaialable (BMW do the best one).

or you could try remaining within shouting distance of legal, thus reducing the likelihood of a pull.

Funnily enough I tried that (not the BMW stuff though might give that a try, thanks)

Problem is it's one of those thin plastic ones and it's getting on a bit now. Headlamps from the car behind glare across it reducing visibility. I'm planning on getting a new one, but I know from other cars it wont help that much.

Even with a clean glass window it can be difficult to spot plod at night, especially on the motorway and they're hanging back a bit. As it happens I do tend to stay within shouting distance of legal in these situations, but better not to irk the traffpol if it can be at all avoided.

Hence, thoughts about decent NV systems to improve all round obs!

the only problem with true night vision is as soon as any vaguely bright light source such as headlamps/streetlights etc was shone at it the image intensifier would be damaged beyond repair

If you do as I do, drive within the current laws of our country, you should have no worries whatsoever about getting a pull.

Well good for you mate. Thanks for your helpful comments about how to improve all round obs. This is the thing about speed isn't it? You can drive around with your eyes shut and still spout self rightous bollo and everyone will be right on your side. Good stuff. Well done. I'll post you a medal.
