wondered what ingredients were used to build PH, content management system, database, hardware software etc...

Don't want to reveal much for obvious reasons, suffice to say it's all developed in house (on top of the database technology obviously).

ok thanks Ted, am in the process of assessing some content management systems, any pointers you can throw into the mix would be appreciated

Ah, see where you're coming from.

For financial reasons initially and due to my obsession with coding everything myself I brewed my system from scratch rather than buy one one. Those that I looked at weren't flexible enough or were too expensive to build into the site as it was evolving.

Having been involved in using CMSes for the last 10 years, I'd advise you to steer clear of Quark's system. It's inflexible, slow, and expensive.

A lot of Web sites brew their own, though.
