Hi guys,

I live in London & work in the city. Fed up of public transport, thinking of buying a scooter for my commute.

I have a full driving license, but presume it's only for cars.

Where do i start..?!?

Help grately appreaciated.

You need to do your CBT and then you can ride a 125cc bike/scooter around for 2 years (or is it three?)

2 years. Although IIRC, if your driving licence was issued before 2001 (don't quote me on that) you can ride up to a 125cc bike without taking a CBT.

I think it may have been before that. CBT is a good idea, though.

Compulsory basic training. I did it in August for my bike. Its basically riding around cones for a while, learning what different parts of the bike do and a load of theory on road positioning, hazards, precautions to take, what to wear etc. Then you go out for about a 2 hour ride. you can use the schools bikes/scooters and it normally costs around £70-80 IIRC. Its easy, the only way to fail is basically to write the bike and several cars off. I know of people who have fallen off during the CBT, broken speed limits and basically ridden like a total arse but they still passed the CBT.

Its more of a fun day out on bikes, but also teaches you some very important stuff.

Dunno, never did one.... but I think it's to test that you can control a bike, basic stuff I imagine.

What he says^^^^

You'll need to do it unless your licence is quite old. My licence is a '92 vintage and I still had to do CBT when I started bike lessons.

When you do the CBT seriously consider doing it on a geared bike as opposed to a scooter.
Reason being that if you think you might want to get a bike in the future the CBT will only cover you for a scooter if that is what you take it on - I think.

Not on a provisional licence, though. Be unfortunate if the stickers got changed, wouldn't it?

Thanks guys, i'll literally be only using it for a 5 mile commute into the city. Weekends i'll bring out the TVR.

I've seen bikes doing training in Wapping. I'll find out who they are.

Thanks again, James.

Cheapest Option:

If your car test is Pre 01 then you have a full Cat P licence, (check the categories on the back though, as you had to 'opt in' on application)

A full Cat P will allow you to ride a 'moped' which is a machine no greater than 50cc incapable of exceeding 31mph. Most will do 36 - 39 mph from the factory so don't worry too much.

No training required! No L Plates! Just buy and go!

30odd mph could be plenty enough for your wee commute....

Recommended Option:

Do CBT, about £100 for a full days training and on completion you can ride up to 125cc on L Plates for 2 years, No passengers - No Motorways, you can refresh your CBT every 2 years until you pop your clogs.
You'll be more aware and will have had some formal supervision on the roads, make sure you get a full 2 hours road riding as this is the MINIMUM for CBT. Some unscrupulous instructors will just run you around the block for 30 minutes and knock off early.

125s are capable of winning most traffic light grand prix and will cruise at 60ish as long as the road's flat.

You won't need a theory test but it's not a bad idea to at least read the books.

when i did my CBT (only a few months ago!) i spent 2 hrs driving round cones, then 2 and 1/2 hrs going round country lanes and quiet roads.

do it on a geared bike tho, people kept telling me to do it on a ped and they knew i was getting a geared bike, but i ignored them and did it on a geared bike, and am happier on the roads for doing it that way (at least my driving lessons taught me how to use a clutch, throttle, etc coz i wudn't have had a clue otherwise!)

take ur time, don't panic (my mate crashed and still passed!) and have fun!

welcome to the world of the two wheelers!
