Buying existing domain names - any advice?
Discussion
Hi folks,
This is posted on the Computers forum but I thought I'd post it here in case some of you have experience with buying existing domain names from the current owners.

If the renewal fee is not paid within 30 days
of that date, the domain name is suspended for 60 days. During this time the
domain does not function. If the renewal fee has still not been received
after 60 days, the domain name is automatically
They don't give specific dates simply to stop people sniping easily.. its deleted a random number of days after 60 (upto 7 random days at a random time I think)
Sniping will be possible from anywhere.
Technically, if you're in the UK sniping, you've got a few hundred milliseconds head start on the US due to latency, but I don't think its going to make the world of difference unless its something VERY sought after, sex.co.uk, shop.co.uk etc.
The .com is harder, if its masked, then the only way to contact them will be via the email provided, plus sales@ info@ support@ webmaster@ postmaster@domain.com (might have some email forwarding in place, but unlikely)
You've already done about as much as you can do now. The ONLY was these places release contact details is via suphoena , so unless you can think of a way to sue the current owners (and so suphoena their details) you're pretty much out of luck.
I must say, it seems quite remiss of a Start-up to pick a name without first checking the Domain Availability status, given its one VERY easy way to kill your cash flow (as you're finding out!)
Feel free to drop me a mail via profile if you have any more queries.
GL with it!

Thanks a lot Jamie. Scratching my head now to come up with reasons to sue them.
This is a UK-based venture (at least for now), and we think we have the UK domain in the bag (or at least we've taken all the measures I know of to make sure we're in the running for that domain).
The dot com is a nightmare though. The directors came up with the brand with the agency, said it's fabulous and then gave me instructions to go get the domains! The intended MO was economic bullying, but you can't bully someone until you find them, which is the problem.
You'd think that domain squatters would have a way to be found by buyers, which I presume has got to be one of the big reasons why they even buy hundreds in the first place!

(4hrs definitely classes as 'shortly' - you have to pay Dell a fortune for that response time!)
Pah 4 hours, mornings dont count as 'JB Time'
so it was only really about 45 mins from 1pm
