After all your great advice I'm zoning in on manual 996 turbos now -- even booked some viewings this week and next as it goes.

But could I have a bit of background please? I'm told the 996tt engine is fundamentally different from the regular 996 engine and has a different bloodline.

To satisfy my curiosity what are some technical differences?

Regards
Andy

If you look at a 996 turbo or 993 turbo crank case you will see the part number starts with 964.___

So the basic engine bottom end is as it was in the 993 turbo and the 964 3.6 turbo (and possibly the 3.3 turbo) before that. That's why you don't hear about RMS issues on the 996tt/996gt2.
I believe the 996gt3 uses a 964/993 bottom end too, though i'm not sure if it's the same as the turbos use.

It would be very difficult to cover all the differences on the engines as they're completely different engines but as a baseline let me give some pointers...

Turbo engine's crancases part number start by 964 which means their from 964 era, actually derived from GT1's engine which was based on 964 crankcases but converted to water cooling to win Le Mans unlike M96 engines (996's) which were designed from scratch to leak on garage floor.
Turbo and GT3 engines are based on the same crankcases (964). They're FULLY dry sumped (unlike M96's - semi-dry sump) which makes them track ready and I could be here all day long talking about the fact they're oversquare engines, bla, bla but the bottom line is that these engines are known to be bullet proof and good to handle up to 600bhp with NO INTERNAL modifications for years of use!

Bore and stroke are different too! Though both engines are 3.6 litres,

the NA M96/03 is bore x stroke: 96 x 82.8

the TT M96/70 is bore x stroke: 100 x 76.4

kiko, I'd really appreciate reading some other stuff about this engine. What's a good book you'd recommend?

Of course, if you'd like to continue talking about squareness of bore/stroke, rod length and crank throws, valve gear, turbo design and what-have-you, I'd be delighted to read about it!
