It's got so bad that builders working on a laboratory for Oxford University have to wear masks to conceal their identities from animal rights activists. It is well passed time that the government treated these 'activists' like the Terrorists they are.

Builders working on a new research facility in Oxford are so afraid of reprisals from animal rights activists that they are wearing masks to hide their faces.

Work has restarted on the laboratory after it was halted by threats from activists who say it will be used for primate research. Montpellier Group, the contractor, pulled out in July 2004 after shareholders were threatened but a new firm began work earlier this month. The builders, who work behind tall hoardings, are wearing ski masks after activists warned of consequences should their identities be discovered.

A spokesman for Oxford University, which is building the laboratory on the South Parks Road, said it was not its policy for the builders to wear masks and that some had done so to protect against the cold. But he added: "Concerns about their identity may also play a part."

Builders and decorators in the Oxford area have also been sent threatening letters warning them not to work with the university.

Activists have made Oxford the main target of their campaign, which has become increasingly violent, with bombs being left in people's cars by the Animal Liberation Front. A number of university buildings have also been targeted in arson attacks.

Robin Webb, an ALF spokesman, warned that no university property would be considered safe. The Speak campaign, which says it uses lawful means to protest against the laboratory, claimed the masked builders proved that there is "one law for us and another for Oxford University". A spokesman said: "We aren't allowed to hide our identities. Obviously one has to ask oneself who are the terrorists?"

Thames Valley Police said the builders were carrying out their lawful business and that protesters had to uncover their faces only in certain circumstances under the Public Order Act. Speak said it would discover the identity of the new contractor when the reopening of the site was announced.

It claims it has informers in the Home Office and the university, adding that finding out the name was only a matter of time.

The university has a projected completion date for the delayed laboratory but refuses to reveal it. The facility is likely to cost £20 million, but this does not include extra security costs.

Totally agree. Terrorist is the word - these people are evangelical fundamentalists with no grasp of reality.

Talking of which - something that made my blood boil last night...

Anyone see f**kwit Malcom McLaren on TV last night (11-12) doing his animal rights program where he spouts on about horrible scinetists hurting poor defenceless animals.

Prog takes scientist who works on animals and subjets them to daft trials (i.e sit in smokey room - becuase dogs in canda are forced to smoke cigarettes by evil scientists) - errr I think you'll find thats tobacco companies. And you smoke mr mclaren - f**king hypocrite.

Next - force scientist to stand on hotplate. Plate heats up until slightly painful. sCientist hops. Is then given painkiller and made to do the jumping on hotplate again. - Mclaren - says "Evil scientists make rats do this to test painkillers" - weoll thanks f**k they do as I happen to be quite keen on painkillers when I need them. Given that there are still a whole bunch of types of pain out there that scientists cant control (many of them related to cancer / leukeamia treatment) that this goes on.

I'd like to hit the big ginger idiot with a dead labrat until he's a pulp. Happy to smoke and support the tobacco companies who are doing pointelss research that is totll cruel, and yet rubbish scientists working on the forefront of technology to reduce suffering in human cancer patients whilst smoking a fag. Just hope if he gets cancer the docs treat him organically and deny him any drug ever tested on an animal.

BBC have posted the home addresses of 4 terrorist animal right campaigners who were possibly involved with the removal of Gladys Hammonds remains from the churchyard but were involved with blackmailing the guinea pigs farms owners.

bbc said said:
The four others charged with blackmail offences are Kerry Whitburn, 36, of Summer Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham; John Smith, 38, of Leicester Street, Wolverhampton; John Ablewhite, 35, of Hawley Street, Manchester and Josephine Mayo, 37, of Cottage Close, Chasetown, Staffs.

All four appeared at court at the beginning of December and entered not guilty pleas. Three were remanded in custody, while Ms Mayo had her bail extended.

Let us hope that a very very very large shower of rancid skunk sh1t passes over them in the very near future.

Having just scored a contract to build another of my famous (or infamous) rat-nuking machines to be used in cancer research, I'd like to go on record as saying 'F*** you, assholes' to these people.

This whole thing in Oxford is weird!

I work here and drive past the site of the lab every day: The builders are all wearing white balaclavas that look like those flash masks the navy use: They are surrounded by security guards with black scarves around their faces and during the last couple of days they have been putting up a sheet steel (not mesh – solid steel) barricade around the site:

I have a friend that works for the University – nothing remotely to do with animal research or anything similar – a nice guy with kids at home etc: His house / car were paint bombed by the animal rights lot a few months back: Would seem he lives near some professor or other:

Its bl**dy surreal.

I'd be happy to carry out experimentation on animal activists.

Just how strong are your convictions chaps? Ready to step into the breach for the poor fluffy bunny wabbits?

The thing that annoys me most (apart from the "terrorism" - which is absurd and offensive) is the illogic - despite their protestation there really is no viable alternative short of testing on people. (Which would be OK if it were THEM)

As I've said before, they need to get their small heads around the reality that, sadly, mankind is the dominant species, you don't get to be the dominant species by being nice, and until people manage to progress to treating each other well (still sometime off I fear) animals are pretty much stuffed.

Whilst I agree their actions are totally unacceptable I do believe that we should test on people if it really is that important to test in the first place. I personally do not agree with animal testing - if you want to around with nature go screw your own sepcies to do it rather than some other poor animal who never asked for the improvement in the first place. Show me a rabbit interested in pancreatic cancer or lip gloss and I might change my tune!!

So you would rather have experimental cancer treatments tested on human subjects than animals?

Testing for LD50 might be a problem then.

For every 10,000 compounds medicine companies discover only 15 get onto the market, how can you think we shouldn't test them first?

1)The human animal is not an 'other' animal and may well react differently. Lots of things look promising in animal trials and come a cropper on human clinical trials.

z)Please please please no more special legislation to deal with specific threats. We've got plenty of laws already to deal with intimidation (quite an old crime). Shouldn't parliament be in the job of making things simpler for it's paymasters rather that jobs for lawyers?

£%^)I went into a vivisectionists lab when they were still rife (guest of major clint doing toxicity tests on planaria/bacteria). It met every standard for cleanliness etc etc and was 100% kosher (sic). Industrial farming of beagles really sticks in your memory.

:yawn:can't condone blah blah - lunatic fringe blah blah - any group blah blah.

YES! I actually believe that we around with nature too much so I personally believe that nature should deal with this stuff rather than trying to create cures by harming other creatures. Just MHO of course. And before anyone asks... I am a good old Conservative voting, sports car driving (when I can afford it) anti lentalist.

Won't stop you using the medicines developed from that testing though will it?
