I am sure this has been asked many times before but how is the best way to mount the number plate on the body at the bottom rather than on the grill? Saw a couple of cars recently and think it makes the front-end look much better, I assumed that self tappers is the way forward but I'm obiously not too happy about the thought of drilling holes in the front of my P&J.

Hey mate,

Alot of people, myself included, use a strong double sided tape. 3M Tape stuff.... sorry if im a bit vague on the name of it but i just cannot for the life of me remember..

Very good idea though... excellent for keeping the temp down.

Have lowered the plate on the front of mine which, as well as making the front end look a bit cooler, it also helps the engine to actually run cooler. On the road she runs at about 70 and rises to around 80-85 in traffic.

Though she chose not to do this half way up the Stevlio though!

I lowered mine by putting self tappers through the top of the plate and the bottom of the grill - like you I didn't want to drill any holes - see topic www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=190820

I get it from my local paint factors, its called Re-fix tape, used for re fixing trim and badges. If yours is the later chim its pretty easy as the plate will span the gap to the centre rail, I think you can see it on my profile. In my case since the reg is only 5 characters I have trimmed off the redundant ends of the plate to significantly reduce its overall size but maintained the proper spacing of the characters, so far plod hasnt objected. Use tape along the full length to give the required strength and carfully degrease before fitting, warming the area and the tape with a hot air gun will also aid adhesion.

Try to mount it so that it's loose then at speed it may tilt backwards. Could you use a long bit of string?

This could scratch the paint though, ever considered a slightly smaller plate?

Apparantly henley heritiage make some kind of rubber brackets that affix to the bottom of the front end and you can stick the plate to them directly without having to drill the body. Has anyone heard of these or is it just a crazy roumour? sounds like a great idea tho.

I too like the look of the lowered number plate... However, lots of threads recently on how cold running affects low MPG (and possibly performance!)... and I wondered how much opening the radiator by lowering the plate affects this?

Well I moved my plate down off the grill about 5 years ago and I've not had any problems

I just bite the bullet and got the Black & Decker out and drilled 2 holes and self tapped it in to the body, it's angled back slightly to follow the shape of the nose and it's been fine

Hi raceboy, great colour, must be very fast. My number plate has been lowered, engine runs very cool these days 50 / 70 deg, but in traffic up to 90 deg. I am thinking of moving it back to the original position during winter.

doing this should not make the car run to cool, thats the whole point of having a thermostat, unless the stats stuck open then it will effect MPG,just my dimes worth.

I must admit I did the same..some years ago. Partly cause the temp gauge went up into 120s. Had a problem with thermostat too. I just removed it..and hard wired the fans to stay on perm. The Chimera is always hot...regardless...so i dont see the point of thermostat. 10 mins in the car, even in winter, in like sitting in a sauna.
As for having fans on..dont see an issue apart from inc. in petrol. But lets face it...if you can afford to run a V8 4-0....who cares abot the extra pennies.. Vroooom.
