Hi all

Stopped smoking today after reading the alan carr book (rather fine)

Still kind of crawling the walls but the way I see it, the next three months are going to go by anyway and it'll be cool to be a non smoker then!

Anyone got any helpful tips or encouragement??

Cheers

From a January quitter:
If you really wanted to quit, rather than being nagged into it, you've already won. You just need to remember why you quit, rather than wanting another fag.
Change your habits where you used to smoke, ie find another pub, or part of the same pub. Try and break the mental connection between am in table 7, need ciggie type thing.
Find something to keep you busy instead of the smoking. My GPRS bill went ballistic when I quit as I started texting and playing on t'internet instead of fiddling with a pack of fags.
Think smily thoughts about living longer, and getting your moneys worth out of the bloody government..

You gotta want to aswell, I am an ex smoker and but have fallen back to smoking again a number of times.
But have kept trying and doing well at the moment but have only ever stopped easily when I Have really wanted to. I was expecting to maybe have a Big Cigar at BTandP and didnt which surprised me and the misses
The actual craven only last minutes so when you do feel like one quickly find something to take you mind of it and teh craven will pass.

Good luck

I gave up after reading this book at the start of the year.

I now only have a fag if I've consumed lots of alcohol. Don't even want one in the day now, at all.

And I'd smoked for 20 odd years.

Yes After those 3 months have passed (without a fag) it's the most difficult time. During the 3 months the novelty of giving up, the cravings, the family packs of M&Ms you have whenever the craving starts, etc, etc, etc, make the whole giving up thing a novelty & help to focus your attention ("I'm feeling this crap because I'm doing the noble thing of quitting fags" ). Once you've given up, the cravings have gone (mostly) & you think you've knocked it on the head, then it's the most dangerous time. I've made it to then a few times, but just one night in the pub when you have a couple of pints too many, one mate who offers you his tin of that wonderful smelling baccy, one drunken rollup & the next morning you'll be climbing the walls like you've only just given up. Well, that's where I usually fail.
That book seems to do the job: my missus & several long term smoking mates all managed to finally give up after reading it. The important thing is that you must really want to give up, you really do feel that it's time to stop. If you give up because you've been nagged, or you feel you should, the chances of success aren't that good.
Good luck
edit: people who just have the "odd" fag when down the pub haven't given up, they're still hooked. If I had a quid for every mate that had given up but just had the "odd fag" with a few beers then I'd probably be able to fill my petrol tank (and many of them let those odd fags turn into 10 a day, but all during the evening so it's OK!). And if those people would stop scrounging rollies off me in the pub then I wouldn't have to go out and buy 1oz of baccy before a night in the pub.... bloody non-smokers

System 3 Guide to not smoking said:

Read this from top to bottom and learn the differences between the RULES and the FACTS. The RULES is what you are governed by and the facts supports the reasons for the rules.

3 Rules
1) Set a time and a date and that is ZERO HOUR. It is not flexible, nor negotiable. Your house will be a NON SMOKING SITE from this time and date. This means removing the temptation, so NO CIGS stashed anywhere and NO ASHTRAYS.

2) Absolutely NO cigarettes after that time because YOU DON’T SMOKE. There are NO exceptions. See the list of excuses. If it’s on there or SIMILAR it’s an excuse - END OF! Just answer the question – Do you smoke? NO!

3) No patches. They will feed your body nicotine and you will still have unnecessary withdrawal symptoms long after a week. You could also get cancer of the skin as the nicotine is being drawn through the skin instead of the lungs.

3 Facts for the 3 above rules
1) Nicotine IS a drug. While you smoke and shortly after, it will make you crave for a fix like a junkie does with crack cocaine or heroin. Make no mistake this drug WILL kill you and those around you if you continue. Zero Hour is the time and date whereby you agree with yourself to STOP SMOKING. Past that point you don't smoke YOU ARE A NON SMOKER. It's really that simple. If you have a craving, just remind yourself that you have given up and think about the logic: If you don’t smoke why have a cigarette?!

2) You will want to smoke (so your body is telling you). The first 24 hours is the hardest but when you get here your over the worst. The next 24hours is less so

3) GIVING UP IS EASY. It happens in 3 stages.

Stage 1
The first 24hours. This is where you will feel the need to have a quick fix. See rule 2. You have to convince your body that the 'alarm messages' you are receiving are false and they need to be ignored. It helps if you can do stuff away from anywhere and on your own, but wherever you are just keep busy. Have lots of packets of POLO’s or similar and when you want a fix eat one. It will kill the hand-to-mouth routine. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE CHOCOLATE! Or you will need to give up that next! You can be ‘nice’ to yourself and eat chocolate though, that is fine! After 24hours have passed you can give yourself a big hug because you have now given up officially for one day. This was the hardest part: it gets easier now.

Stage 2
The next 24hours. I felt a bit odd and lightheaded. I was somewhat irrational mentally. After the end of this period its very easy and virtually no cravings. Well done, you have done the worst of it!

Stage 3
Cravings will be much fewer. I still get them 3 months on but just a ‘one off’. Writing this has also caused a few urges for one but I don’t smoke so why would I do a silly thing like that?! After a week you will be laughing your head off! You have really done it! Just remember these rules and remind yourself time and time again. Quitting smoking is simple you must remember that. People that say its hard are just giving themselves an excuse to carry on smoking.

The following LIST OF EXCUSES is what you will probably be telling yourself when you want a cigarette:

• I need a cigarette. (No you think you do. You NEED to carry on as if WITHOUT because you have already given up at Zero point right? Remind yourself again – you don’t smoke. It's an excuse!)

• Just one won't hurt. (One cigarette means you smoke - no gray area - either you do or you don't, and YOU DON’T SMOKE! It's that simple. Another excuse!)

• I am really stressed and having a bad day. I need a cigarette. NO. You don't smoke! You have given up. Your body is lying to you by telling you that you need one. Another excuse!)

• I can't concentrate at work properly. (True maybe, but your boss will see more of you in the future now you don’t smoke due to less illness. Another excuse!)

• It’s been 2 months since I gave up. One cig won’t hurt with my mates. (Wrong, see Rule 2. You don’t smoke so why start again??

• I can’t sleep at night. I have to have just one.(doubtful, but see your doc for something. Another excuse!)

• I have just had some terrible news and I am having a cigarette to help me deal with it. (But you don’t smoke. Why start? Because its just: Another excuse!)

• Everyone around me is smoking and I don’t fit in. (Rubbish. As if anyone cares whether you smoke or not! Another excuse)

• I am ratty and have mood swings and I need a cigarette. (Well if you’re stupid enough poison your body with an addictive drug then you will want a cigarette but YOU DON’T SMOKE NOW! So it’s Another excuse!)

Are you getting the idea yet? It does not matter what the excuse is, IT’S STILL AN EXCUSE
AND YOU DO NOT SMOKE ANYMORE.

This guide has worked successfully for several people and it works because it’s the truth. Psychologically the drug tells us that we *must have* this or we will die and the body rewards us by making us feel ok after a fix. It is the *must have* lie which this method resolves by breaking down the cravings into simple statements and then showing them as false or true conditions. It is not hard to give up but it’s also very easy to start again. Learn the rules of this ‘game’ and be aware of which state you are in i.e. you are a smoker, OR you are a non smoker. Do not lie to yourself – what the hell is the point if you’re not committed? This guide was written for non smokers who understand what changes from ZERO HOUR onwards.

Repeat again, " I am a non-smoker"
WELL DONE

So simple once you get your head around it. Either you smoke or you don't.

Worked for me, but there again it should do - I wrote it

just think - if you save the price of a packet of fags every day you can reward yourself with a free holiday in the Maldives at the end of the yearand your lungs will be good enough to enjoy all the snorkling as well.

It doesn't work like that though.

You just spend more on car mags, food and ale.

Or just settle for the Algarve. Buy 3,200 fags and have a free holiday with what you've saved in tax.

I'm not really helping, am I

How about sticking the ££'s that you would normally spend on fags in a jar,and watch it grow.
