Mark 1 Pod display
Discussion
Hey guys and girls. On my 2000 Tuscan I am losing the centre LCD display, particularly on damp mornings. Ive always had a few lines missing (which i believe is common). In summer, or warm days it comes back.
Its not really bothered me before but the thing is, i did the Robb Gravett driving day last Sunday (a lesson in high speed cornering) and spent the whole day not knowing what the oil pressure was.
Is there an easy fix?
Do i need a new pod? or a new screen? or something else?

Back to the factory for an overhaul and upgrade
Mr F
I'm having the same problem at the moment with mine. On short runs the screen virtually vanishes but at the end of a long run it's fine and stays fine for about a week. Due to the cold weather I have been assuming that the engine is not up to temperature for about half an hour to play safe if I can't read the screen. My TVR inde has also said that it's a dash out job and back to the factory, he's trying to get a price for me at the moment. He also reckons I should kiss her good-bye for a month. As the tuscan is my only car it's going to have to wait until next April when I'm away for 3 weeks anyway. I'll let you know on costs as soon as I get them.

i had a new one fitted a few weeks ago. its a pod off job, ithink the whole thing gets sent to blackpool. i had mine back in less than a week. even with a brand new screen, its still very slow on cold mornings, all the info is there its just very slow changing revs etc. the lines through my old one were right through the milage, so i could hardly tell how far it had done. they come back now with the same milage on. the screen was changed years ago on my car and was set at 0 miles.

When its cold the LCD screen will take longer to work due to the Liquid part of the LCD being colder and less conductive.
The lines problem seemed to be somehow related to coldness/wetness, although in saying that it may be random as sometimes it would be fine and just when the engine was warming up the lines would appear.
I believe the cost of the new pod screen was something like £70. However the main chunk of the cost is the labout cost in getting the pod out, sending it to the factory, sending it back and fitting the pod back. Possibly an hour and a half at either end if I remember rightly.
Well chaps - just had it done to mine, (as well as the clutch and new gearbox - ho-hum... Great timing what with Xmas and all, "Sorry love - coldn't buy you the diamond earrings as the TIV box and clutch imploded...."
Anyway - screen sent back to Blackpool, returned to Racing Green and fitted - that'll be £300 sir.
I thankyou....
Merry blooming Xmas....

change like I did to a BMW M5 E39
you dont get all these problems and leaks
cheaper to run and you get proper comfort as well as power
Clive :O)
Given the early M5s have shed about £5k in depreciation in the last year or so I'm not convinced about the cheaper running.

I think deprecation on Tuscans has been worse in the last year than any other. When I sold mine (2000/X) for 18K in May this year I saw it coming. This was a Tusc which had niggles and never rebuilt. At the same time there were sorted Tuscs, rebuilt, new clutch, suspension etc going for £25-26k. There have been a couple of completely sorted ones identical to those over the last months which arnt shifting at £17K.
Thats a £9000 depreciation in less than a year. And thats after someone has spent £7000 sorting out the rebuild, clutch and shocks in the previous year or so...
If you buy a 2000 M5 for £15k or thereabouts I bet it wont lose more than half of the Tuscan annual depreciation over the next three years let alone one. Secondly I bet the clutch will last more than 25,000 miles, and you wont have to send it back to the BMW factory with £5000 to fix inherent faults every couple of years.
Each to his own I say, if you have a Tuscan then good luck to you, but there are a number of other options out there which dont quite give as much 'bang' but certainly more bang for your buck.
