......in a car?

And when I say 'scared yourself silly' I'm talking about an arse-clenching-nut-tightening-knickers-in-a-twist type of moment.

If you haven't had one recently, give us your favourite 'I'd like to forget that moment' from your respective driving careers.

I'll start you all off.

I managed to drive my dad's car into a hole in the beach at the weekend! You know how it is; we went to the beach, I was allowed to drive my dad's car, which I did and as we trundled along (my dad was paranoid about hitting something - I was like 'we're on a beach?') when I drove straight into a pit. You know, one of those 'boats' that Dad's dug for his kids so that they can pretend they're sat in one?

Not much damage to the car but my pride's been written off!

I'm 30. !

Dad did have a nice car.....

Coming up to a staggered junction on top of a slight crest, on a gentle curve, doing about 80 ish ..... car just round the corner saw me, pulled out, stopped, then came on out, just as I was going to drive round the front of him .......

Almost took the back off his car.....

Worst bit was the fiesta behind me went straight between our now bent and damaged cars and into a telegraph pole!

As they say in the military if the flight leader crashs his plane they want to see 2 holes in the ground then they know the wingman was doing his job

I've got 3

1st was when I was trundling along in my dad's Land Rover 110 at about 40mph, and suddently realised I was about 10 feet from a crossroads (my excuse was that it was dark, and someone had twisted the give way sign around so you couldn't see it). I'm pretty sure the guy in the Saab who I tapped the back of was slightly more scared than me though...

2nd was in the Land Rover again, and I was chatting to a mate who was telling me about this particularly sharp left-hander on the road I was driving down. I looked back at the road, to find it was going left quicker than I was, so ended up driving through a ditch, bending several fairly solid bits of suspension, and pulling a tyre off the wheel. I also ended up with bits of grass stuck to the wing mirror some how!

3rd time was hitting the contents of someone's sump going round Coram at Snetterton in my Westfield. 85mph, no grip and not much run off = ouch, although there wasn't really enough time to get too worried before I hit the tyre wall!

A bit silly really but I was going down a singletrack country road in the Integrale, really enjoying myself feeling like McRae. It was wet so I wasn't going too fast but the road dipped down and after a few bends there was a good few inches of mud for about 30 metres on a corner, ABS isn't that clever that it can just stop on mud. Luckily, Torsen 4wd is that clever .

Needless to say I slowed for a while after that while my two mates calmed themselves down and tried to waft the smell of poo away. But then at one point the poor lads were looking straight at a hedge and a few trees while we slid sideways round a wet muddy bend spinning all four wheels

esh, the crossroads incident is the same as mine, except I was doing 65 in a lowered fiesta. I had no choice but to pull a VERY hard right and power slid across both lanes sideways burning rubber. If it wasn't for lowered suspension the car would have rolled for sure.

And another one......

Just been to a meeting with me boss, (out of hours, had a pint and a curry) got told that I was in for a HUGE payrise which made me rather happy. Decided to take the back road home and stretch it a bit, but it was a tad foggy and I lost my bearings slightly ..... came up to a T junction where I should've been turning left but missed it completely and shot straight thru, into the hedge on the other side of the road. I thought it was a solid wall and kakked meself, gripped the steering wheel, foot hard on the brakes, thinking "this is gonna hurt" Now this hedge turned out to be a fence and was a bit below the road surface so I shot straight thru two lines of barbed wire - one under the car, the other up the bonnet and over - into a cow field.

Being a 4x4 I managed to turn it around, opened the gate and drove the remaining 4 miles home with about 50 yds of barbed wire trailing down the side of the car from where it was stuck under the bonnet... The sparks were quite amazing to watch out the rear-view mirror.

One incident springs to mind....

With apache in my Tamora one day on the way to meet up with Nubbin and Andy (alt) at Colin Blower motorsport's open day.

Flying along one of my favourite B roads at xxxmph when I spotted a cyclist sitting at a side road about 1/2 mile ahead of me. How the dickehead didn't see a bright f****g yellow TVR coming towards him I don't know, but he pulled out, into the middle of the road suddenly spotted me and after a brief look turned full circle back towards the side turning. I had no time to brake at all and just headed for where he sat (like racing drivers do) hoping he would move before I got there!!
Fortunatley I missed him but it was bloody close!! Apache was also the colour of Pete's underpants afterwards!!

It's fair to say this was quite a moment. Well, quite a few moments all *rolled* into one. (excuse the pun).

Driving through flooded back roads in Suffolk at 2:00am in the morning - all the backroads were impassable to the elise - so i got on the main road
got up to about sixty down the main road into the village - approaching the railway bridge the road dips
oops didn't see the standing water - hit a DEEP pool of water and span the car - through the railway bridge ie between 20ft of solid brickworks

both me and the wife needed a few whiskeys after that

garg, my fiesta would have ended like that when I were 18 if it wasn't for those lowered hard springs. Who ever says maxy p boys waste money on suspension! Money well spent!

Had quite a funny one when I was 18 out in my mum's Sierra at the time.

Myself and the boys were out for a giggle one night and decided it would be hilarious to steal some of the flashing lanterns in the roadworks on the M63 towards Manchester airport.

Well, what we hadn't realised is that these things are paraffin powered, so having made off with several we had a car filling with smoke and fumes! Added to which is was a foggy night anyway, we decided to pull off at the airport and jettison said lanterns.

Coming in off the motorway, at about 70 (yes, it was!) I totally didn't see the up and coming roundabout which the car promptly leapt into (one of the flowerbed ones). I drove through a flowerbed, stopped at the edge where we lobbed out the lanterns and buggered off - Sierra intact.

Of course! Much better in the daylight. Nice tyre tracks over the green grass and flowerbed.

Have some of that, flowerpowerpeople.

(It was pretty bloody scary at the time!)

Hadnt been in the States long, decided to take the Viper for a bit of blast, enjoying myself on a deserted back road.

Driving along and theres a car on my side of the road , flash flash, he doesnt move. We are now closing at quite some rate. Flash, flash - still nothing.

It was only then that I realised that I was on the left

Matt.

Heading rather quickly down a windy but clear B road. There had been rain. Then I saw a very large puddle just as I was approaching a bend I needed to brake hard for. I braked, hit the puddle, the back went light, and suddenly I had a choice between either not braking and allowing the rear of the car to precede the front, or hoping there was grip enough to get me round the bend.

What did I do? Took foot off brake (a very brave moment -- for me, anyway), applied a little power and allowed car to drift round bend onto the other side of the road which luckily I could see was clear. Rear stays where it oughta be, just. Nothing damaged except my pride...

Was a fair while ago - was only a teenager at the time. Anyway driving down a back road near Garstang with my girlfriend up front, best mate and his girlfriend in back. Anyway, was dark and I came up to a tight left hander that I had forgotten was there. Front end washed away (Peugeot 205) and I ended up dashing headlong towards a house.

Somehow managed to save it (divine intervention I believe) and then set off s l o w l y home again getting a load of abuse from the 2 girls. Strangely enough my mate (who was a boyracer through and through) did not say anything. When we got home I asked him what was up. It turns out his lass had been getting very dirty in the back of my car without my noticing and when we lost it she had bitten down....rather hard....

Ah the fun and games of youth!
