I have begun to notice a rapid ticking noise from the engine - but only once it's warmed up. I guess it's around 10 ticks per second at idle - so presumably this would suggest it's not a problem with a single cylinder. It is revs-dependent because if you blip the throttle you can hear it sort of skipping and slowing down as the revs settle down again. It is quite possible that it's always been there but I'm only just starting to become aware of it - although it seems pretty obvious - or it could be something new. I guess this could be anything... don't suppose this is very common on these engines by any chance? Maybe just valvetrain noise?

You haven't changed your oil for a thinner type have you? Thats what happened to me but I've heard of noisy injectors doing it too.

That's pretty normal valvetrain noise,

from what I believe you're saying.
Consider trying a 10Wxx oil if you aren't already using it.

That MAY cut down on the lifter noise you are experiencing.
