2005 warmest ever year in north
By Richard Black
Environment Correspondent, BBC News website
This year has been the warmest on record in the Northern Hemisphere, say scientists in Britain.
It is the second warmest globally since the 1860s, when reliable records began, they add.
Ocean temperatures recorded in the Northern Hemisphere Atlantic Ocean have also been the hottest on record.
The researchers, from the UK Met Office and the University of East Anglia, say this is more evidence for the reality of human-induced global warming.
Their data show that the average temperature during 2005 in the Northern Hemisphere is 0.65C above the average for 1961-1990, a conventional baseline against which scientists compare temperatures.

The global increase is 0.48C, making 2005 the second warmest year on record behind 1998, though the 1998 figure was inflated by strong El Nino conditions.
The Northern Hemisphere is warming faster than the south, scientists believe, because a greater proportion of it is land, which responds faster to atmospheric conditions than the ocean.
Northern Hemisphere temperatures are now about 0.4C higher than a decade ago.
"The data also show that the sea surface temperature in the northern hemisphere Atlantic is the highest since 1880," said Dr David Viner, from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
Error bar
No measurements of average temperature can be completely accurate, and Dr Viner believes the team's calculations are subject to an error of about plus or minus 0.1C.
However, he says, the long-term trend is clearly upwards - rapidly over the last decade - indicating the reality of human-induced global warming.
"We're right, the sceptics are wrong," he told the BBC News website.
"It's simple physics; more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, emissions growing on a global basis, and consequently increasing temperatures."
However, Fred Singer from the Science & Environmental Policy Project in Washington DC, a centre of the "climate sceptics" community, disputed this interpretation.
"If indeed 2005 is the warmest northern hemisphere year since 1860, all this proves is that 2005 is the warmest northern hemisphere year since 1860," he told the BBC News website.
"It doesn't prove anything else, and certainly cannot be used by itself to prove that the cause of warming is the emission of greenhouse gases.
"It requires a more subtle examination to know how much of warming is due to man-made causes - there must be some - and how much is down to natural causes."
Eight of the 10 warmest years since 1860 have occurred within the last decade.![]()

Err I dont think so, that amount of time is a gnats rear end in the grand scheme of things and barely half a degree is four fifths of bugger all.
All this proves is that your an arse Dr Viner

Who knows though?
Surely we're all guessing up to a point.
Exactly, it doesnt prove anything about climate warming or cooling or doing whatever it feels like so why make such outrageous claims like it proves all skeptics wrong when it doesnt? Does he expect people to just let his gobbledy gook float over their heads and then believe the last couple of words he says rather than look at some meaningless figures?

In a word. Yes. Furthermore that's exactly what the vast majority of the populace will do.

0.5 deg C increase IS very significant in climatic terms - the melting of the polar ice caps is significantly reducing the salinity in the northern Atlantic - which has reduced the flow of the "atlantic conveyor" of warm gulf stream by over 30 % in the past 10 years ( which is what keep the UK'S climate temperate )
Slowing of the gulf stream could give us winters more like Newfoundland.
I personally think climate change is a real and significant issue ..... but I guess the crux issue is WHAT is causing it - emission of greenhouse gases or natural climatic cycle ? I would rather err on the side of caution and seek to reduce emissions than wait for 100% concrete proof either way ( when it could be too late )
The only thing is, for people to say its rubbish that there isn't a problem is normally based on absolutely ZERO fact.
Whereas this guy above obviously specialises in certain subjects which must reveal facts to him.
I think he's more likely to be right than you, r988. Simply because its his field of work.
Doesn't mean he is right but more likely to be. ?

Hold on sonny jim
How will winters get colder if global temps are going up, as the 'pile of horse shit' chart shows.
Government "Scientists" will say whatever the guys who pay them (i.e. evil lying politician scumbags) want them to say.......
It's going to rain frogs, whatever.... bunch of lying heathens...... The global temperature in Northern Europe is going DOWN FFS!!!!!!! has been for the last 250 years!!!! Proof is there for allwho actually WANT to see it, Greenwich Observatory, combined with Upsalla University......... More global warming BULLSHIT!!!!!

Good point
..... the increase in temp shown applies to the whole of the Northern hemisphere not just the UK - which is a tiny % of the total. From what I've seen / read ..... the gulf stream effect of colder winters would really only effect the UK , and a few other coastal bits of North West Europe ..... many other places in the northern hemisphere already have bloody cold winters. So ... for the UK - we would could get warmer summers and colder winters perhaps (?) - while most other areas get warmer overall(? ). Also .... I think the real trigger for the freezing winters would be if the "Atlantic conveyor" virtually stops .... if its doesn't then perhaps we'll get warmer winters and summers (?) ..
...... goes to show that predicting climate change isn't very precise !

Why 1860? What statistical rule makes 1860 the year to stop at?
That graph is also fantastically misleading. It starts at an arbitary (and VERY recent) date, and doesn't show absolute values, but deviations from 'the norm' (whatever that is). It also has a scale that makes 0.2 of a degree look massive.
There might be some significance to all this, but the report and the information being presented is purely sensationalist nonsense.
