Oh dear, Jeremy's in hot water again.....

http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=2408932005

Let's see now, that's the Welsh, French, Belgians and Germans to date. Have I missed any?

Presumably Basil Fawlty will be arrested when he steps onto German soil, too?

Hehehee. Naughty Jeremy! At least they can console themselves that he's nice about their cars - M6, Bugatti, porker GT, etc.

Anyway, they started it!

it is amazing (and a wee bit sad) how many people in britain, when germany is mentioned, can only think of the nazis

I'd say they made a pretty lasting impression. Know what you mean though.

He shouldn’t have done it but lets not go OTT about it.

And really, is it any wonder? Two of the biggest events in history...

Anyway Germany for me reminds me of BMW's and the Autobahn (which I believe was constructed by the Nazis).

"And the Autobahn...don't forget the Autobahn.

Yeah but apart from the Nazis and the Autobahn, what have the Germans EVER done for us ?"

If some germans think this is bad, then they won't know what's hit them when England football fans come over next year for the world cup.

A reporter in the times today predicted that the fans will be marching past the german police, hands in the air.

And in their infinite wisdom, the German powers that be have scheduled the Nurburgring 24 hours right in the middle of the world cup..

It's the weekend immediately after the England v Trinidad & Tobago match IIRC

that would be quite amusing i suppose , but the germans won't find it remotely funny if fans do nazi salutes en masse. with england's reputation, deserved or not, the riot cops will steam right in

Hmmm, so did Jeremy make fun of the german state or the german people, if its the latter then he deserves all the hassle he gets.

I think the German State and the German people need to accept that sometimes they are going to be on the receiving end of some jingoistic jibes. The German people (as were) largely supported Hitler, so there is a degree of collective national responsibility.

Of course, since WW2 Germans have been at great pains to point out that they personally never liked the Nazis or supported them. Strange that.

not quite the same, obviously, but do you support your government?

and of course, most of the germans now aren't the same germans from then

I accept that - but the enormity of the crimes perpetrated by Germany in the 20thC are so great that the country has no right to expect to never to be needled about it.

With thousands of brown shirts kicking seven shades out of anyone that didnt take kindly to the (then rising) nazi* party i don't think you can blame the german populace entirely. There were attempts on hitlers life remember once the direction that germany was heading became known, there was even rumours of entire divisions of the german army going to defect and rebel against the regime towards the closing months of WW2.

Your right though, the germans do need to lighten up and accept the stereotypes, all these thought-crimes the germans have is just silly.

*wasnt called the Nazi party at the time, NSDAP or something?

yeah, but when do you seperate the ancestors of those who did those things (or those who simply live in the same places), from the actual people who did it?

and 'needling' or making jokes about the war is uncomfortably close, for many germans, to accusing them of being nazis and murderers, some of the worst criminals in history

that's why it's less funny to them, than to you
