There's a debate on the BBC website about whether Little Britain is funny or not. http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?threadID

I've just tried to add this:

Is Little Britain that much of a comic masterpiece? No, of course not. At best it's a pale imitation of Dick Emery. Do I love it? Absolutely. The greatest entertainment value lies in the soaring blood pressure and reddened faces it invokes in all those earnest PC Guardian-reading sandal knitters. Fantastic!

And been given the following message:

Sorry Your message appears to contain offensive language. Please remove any offensive words from it.

I wonder if the BBC swear filter now blocks any criticism of Guardian Readers, or whether the mention of Dick Emery is so un-PC as to raise their ire?!!

They might have objected to the sandal knitters part.

No, I worked it out in the end. They objected to "Dick". Rather ironic really - quite a high percentage of the journalists I know at the BBC don't object to Dick at all.

Little Britain is hilarious! I've just read the whiny rantings of the majority of posters on the BBC site, they all quote old comedys as the best, yes they were funny during the time and still raise a chuckle, but surely Little Britain, however vile and childish it is, still deserves a gong! I'm so glad i left Britain in 99, since then i've been able to look from a afar what an absolute miserable place it really is, populated by morons with the few bright lights still flickering made to feel like paraiahs for wanting to inject some humour!

best ever sketch from Little Britain? Matt Lucas as the Copper with the old Allegro!! Priceless.... Also notable, when Andy and Lou go for the walk/push and Andy nicks teh womans horse.... classic visual comedy at its finest.

Yes, it was probably the "Guardian" bit. Further proof of the BBC's leanings.

Little Britain is derivitive, repetitive crap designed to appeal to 12 year olds, which is does.

Last series was excellent but I feel that it is becoming repetitive and loosing its edge - but Ill still be watching next week

It's definitely lost its edge, but I still think the blokes in the shop ("Margret! Margret!" are very funny. Plus the bit with the Prime Minister was brilliant this week.

I thought series one was great, but they stopped there, it was repeated and passed off as series two, and then they repeated it again claiming it was series three. Hang on? just realised they didnt even make a full series in the 1st place, it was just the one programme that has been repeated again and again and again and again.

Plenty of comedy programmes rely on this 'one joke different circumstances' humour. The Fast Show did this aplenty.

As you say, funny the first few times but then ...

I like the Ting Tong / Mr Dudley 'just one night sketch' in this series - Creepy!

Ting Tong : Yes Mr Dudley, Ting Tong from Tooting, not from Pong Pong

Ray McCooney is my all time favourite though - hope they bring him back!

Ray: I'm hard yet soft, I am coloured yet clear, I am fruity and sweet. I am jelly. What am I?

Donald: Jelly.

Ray: Yeeeeees.

The reason I think it's been given the award and everyone thinks it's great is because very few people in relation to the current series saw the first series because it was on BBC3 same for series two so now the current series is on BBC2 more people are watching it and for many it's new material. I never saw it originally on BBC3 either, I saw some trailers and thought "pile of crap". I do find quite a bit of it now funny but I think it's got a limited shelf life, this series then probably half way through the next people will find themseleves looking and the the same thing again and turn over to watch "I'm an X-Factor Celebrity Dancing My Way Out of the Jungle to get a new record contract"

Re:- The comment about people objecting to humour being sour numpties, Little Britain isn't humour, it's a joke. The comparison is the old English Lit exam question "Discuss the use of humour in Hobsons Choice", there isn't any, perhaps the lack of humour could be humourous in itself. Little Britain is the worst kind of television dross and I can't believe these fools get paid to do it. I suppose enough people buy McCartney albums, no accounting for taste. Again, TV pandering to the LCD.
