Firstly, let me say I'm a wireless numpty. On that basis, can I have some advice?

My Dad is still living in the dark ages and has only got diallup internet at home. He's bought a wifi laptop for my mum for Christmas and wants to share the diallup connection with her pc. Is there any easy way to do it? i.e. will a wireless router work, or are they just for broadband?

Cheers

If they've got a wirelss card in the PC that's got the facility to behave as an access point, you can use built-in windows internet connection sharing to do it. Detailed instructions would depend on the OS's and specific wireless card involved...

Thanks for the reply - would that mean the main pc would have to be kept on all the time?

Yes, as long as you wanted to use the dial-up connection. I'd keep my eye on how good it is at hanging up the connection too!

I have seen a wireless telephone modem somewhere but google isnt helping at the mo.

You could fit a wireless card into the desktop and aslong as it supports 'AD-Hoc' they will talk to each other, this means the desktop will have to be online for the laptop to access the internet.

Unless your Father is in an area where broadband isnt available try to pursuade him its the way to go. the difference in price between dial up and the cheapest BB service is minimal.
