mouse choice - optical or laser mx518/610 ?
Discussion
the ball type would wear down and needs a good mouse mat to work.
Optical mice are much better as they work on a good flat service and have provide more tracking info.
Lasers are the newest type which capture more data.
**An analogy**
Imagine dipping your hand in a tray of paint and then doing a hand print onto a sheet of paper. The optical print would show the general outline of the hand.
The laser print would show much more detail including your finger prints !
Also the new generation of laser mice have no 'lag'. When you pick up the mouse and re center it, the pointer moves immediately. older mice had an annoying lag which could spell the end of your character in a game.

The latest and greatest laser mice are the Logitech G5/G7, the MS Intellimouse laser mouse 6000, and the Razer Copperhead.
I have a selection of computer rodents - a MS Intellimouse Explorer (optical), Logitech MX510 (optical), Logitech MX1000 (laser cordless) and Logitech G5 (laser).
TBH, any of them will be fine for your purposes, save that the MX1000 has been reported to have some issues with lag when gaming, although I personally have not noticed this using this on my laptop.
My main consideration is gaming, and I can heartily recommend the G5 over all the others. The only issues are that it will not work with all mouse mats unless you install a firmware upgrade (like the Icemat glass mouse pad), and there is only one thumb button for "back" (the earlier versions also had a "forward" thumb button). However, it is incredibly accurate, has on-the-fly resolution switching, adjustable weight system and tilt wheel.

I have a couple of MX1000's at home and an Intelli Explorer Bluetooth at work.
I much prefer the MX1000 but when I siwtched to wireless I realised the extra weight but its not so much of an issue. I have noticed no lag using games. Becareful with the surefaces as on the wooden desk my laser mouse is somewhat irratic.
The bluetooth intelli mouse has sooooo much lag its not worth considering. TBH for the price of the MX1000 id be tempted to go back to wired mice (the MX510).
