first time i've tried this
joined up installed their software, going to download a couple of progs but nothing seems to happen much.

is it something like limewire, to use (only a bit slower)
and what do the symbols against chosen downloads mean.

Have you tried any Bittorrent software before? If not you might find it slow to begin with but you have to keep it online, the longer you are online the more connections you could get but you may also be in a queue for it.

I tend to use Shareaza as it can handle bittorrents, eDonkey, Limewire, Bearshare, Gnutella and other networks all at the same time. I can be connected to up to 6 seperate hubs of the above networks

No this is a first for video/film, and being a bit un-pc I was wondering just what to expect in terms of ease of use and speed.
looking at the bit torrent control panel it looks quite a lot like the limewire.

Some downloads will max out your ADSL and be done in hours. On the other hand, I've had one take 34 days. Completed in the end though....

What you're using is fine, and probably the best solution. Learn to wait

when it says complete or ended or whatever,
will my media player simply play it, or although its less than a year old will some othe programs or patches still be needed

Worth double-checking that your firewall/router is configured correctly if you have got one, that will have a big effect on speed, it'l be in the help menu somewhere.

How does all this torrent stuff stand from a legal viewpoint? OK, some TV shows are distributed freely after airing, but is this a slightly dodgy route to getting stuff you'd otherwise pay for? I don't want to suddenly get bills for downloads in a few years time like some parents seem to have received for their kids music downloads etc.

Am I being a little dumb here?

Generally speaking, it's completely, utterly, 100% illegal. Downloading somebody elses copyright is only allowed with their permission and you can bet your shirt that it won't have been given for these shows.

Whether they could ever be bothered to go after the little guy is a risk you have to decide if you want to take, but don't let anybody try to kid you that it's OK just because it's been broadcast on TV, isn't available to buy etc.etc.

Personally I download loads and couldn't give a monkeys

bit ttorent aint slow trust me m8
the more seed there are to peers for the file you want the faster its is
just check that the needed port is open if you have a router or firewall or that will slow you down.

tip your useing bitcomet so change the lisening port in options as some isp trottell the default bit torrent port.
a note re bitcommet a lot of trakers are banniong the cliaint at the moment because it ignoreds the private tracker flag.

What ISP are you with? I'm with PlusNET and they shape the traffic to reduce P2P speeeds as I assume they haven't got enough bandwidth to provide the service they said they could

And then have the cheek to charge you a cancellation fee of about £60.

Can anyone reccomend a good ISP? Even my friends 1Mb AOL connection is lightning fast compaired to my PlusNET 2Mb connection...

Looking at the top bar of the application, it says "Download 17KB/s" ... so about 140 Kb/s. Given that most ADSL still has an upload speed of 128Kb/s, if you were connecting point to point with someone else's ADSL connection, this is about the maximum speed you could expect.

Am I the only person who finds it bizarre that someone would post a screenshot of them performing an illegal activity on a public forum?

Personally, I'd remove the screenshot and ask anyone who's quoted it to do the same.

I might just do that if I realised half-way through that one of the team went on public forums to advertise his criminality.

Isn't the ADSL upload speed usually 256K? Mine puports to be and I'm on a domestic 2 meg connection.

And I never did understand the correlation between speed and download speed. I have a 2M connection which downloads at 250kb/s. My old 56k modem might have seen 4kb/s, my 512 downloaded at 60kb/s etc..

Ack, before you go slagging Plus Net off, did you read the T+Cs? If you £58.75 up fornt upon installation, then you have NO monthly contract. This is the only way to get out of the fee, same with other ISPs only they dress it up by tieing you in for a year.

I've had absolutely no issues with P2P on Plus Net, and indeed find it very fast: and heres the rub:

If the torrent is popular i.e. latest episode of Lost, then it should be wickedly fast. Otherwise an old 80's episode of Top Gear which nobody on earth is seeding will be very very slow.

Also ensure that you port forward the port that BitTorrent is coming in over as this drasticly improves your download speeds.
