I drove a boxster (service car) and the doors auto locked when driving away. I think the car was programmed to do this as a safety item.

Is this programmable into the 996 (2002)? and what are the easy to follow steps if any one has done it please.

I normall drive with my doors locked but would be good if the car auto did it when driving away.

Thanks

By the way, is it true that in case accident the doors unlock?
I also drive with my doors locked but I'm afraid of possibly not being able to get out in case of emergency...

I believe it can (only?) be done by the dealer with their big computery type configuration thing. There's three settings. One's not to lock automatically, and one's to lock at a certain speed, and i can't remember the third. It should say in the handbook.

As for unlocking in a crash, i assume it'll do it if the airbag goes off.

correct, its described in the andbook, and the dealer can do it. I find that auto locking above a certain speed a very useful function indeed.

In terms of security, it's better to lock the doors yourself AS SOON as you get in the car. Car-jackers sometimes won't wait for you to start the engine and start to drive off before attacking.

However, autolock is probably a useful fall-back mechanism for the absent-minded who perhaps forget to lock the doors at all.

you mention doors locking above a certain speed.
I am only asking but what is the advantage of this?
I tend to lock my doors when I am in town in case of petty thieves or at worst car jacking....so i would prefer them to lock BELOW a certain speed!!
what am i missing here guys?

They lock once the car reaches Xmph, they then stay locked until you open a door from the inside.

Dead right paulc, the Porkster and the barge do just that. I'm sure both can be changed by gratuitous RTFM - well, I know that's true for the Merc because I switched it on - didn't want some smartass jumping in the back and asking me to take them to Birmingham International or anything.

seriously ,,can someone give me a clue why you would need to lock the doors above a certain speed, where as i thought having them locked at london traffic speeds was more of an advantage to stop undesirables getting in..

They lock at something like 2mph. The logic being that they lock when you start the journey. And they stay locked until you tell them otherwise, or open the door, whereupon the process starts again.

This is a function more and more manufacuters are putting into there cars, but for anyone out there with an older car. Many of the alarm systems you already have installed support such locking features, or can be upgraded quite cheaply.
