Any ideas of the easiest way to free the front brakes on a 993 c4s, i have not used the car for about 3 weeks went out early this morning for a blast and it wouldnt move , after a bit of preasure on the right foot the rears released but the fronts are locked solid.I dont want to keep trying to move it as the rears started to spin and i am worried about cooking the clutch.

Oh dear, probably wet when you put her away.

It will need a shock to break the rust, could try removing the wheel and blow lamp on the disk slowly and evenly, or kettle of hot water.

Never tried this, so don't sue... but it is what i would probably do

Either whip the pads out & clean em & disc face to sort it or just give it a lot of welly till they unstick- the latter is far easier

Get a mallet and tap the calipers through the wheels. That should sort it.

I always get this in the winter months, as I have to park the car outside.

I just alternate quick first and reverse clutch applications. I really hate it since it shags the clutch and, at the end of the day, once you've freed the brakes up, there will be pad material stuck to the disc and it *will* judder from then on. Realistically I'm resigned to replacing discs and pads yearly.

The trick of driving the last few seconds lightly left foot braking under power to heat the discs and dry them before stopping is one I do, however if it's outside and there's heavy rain then you may still have the problem.

Also see the other thread about sometimes this not being an option!!

IS it best no leave the car parked in the cold with the handbrake on?

Best not to in any kind of extreme cold, rather leav in in reverse, or put a brick under the wheel

Presumably rear wheel drive and rear handbrake, so it's a bit strange that the fronts should seize on so severely - is this common with these cars?

Had the problem every winter in all 3 of my 993s. Can't speak for the newer cars.

Incidentally I park mine on as flat a surface as poss, in gear and with the handbrake off. If it's been seriously wet, the brakes are still stuck when I next use it (weekends and occassionally during the week) - it's not a handbrake thang...

Thanks for the replies i got the RAC out and the patrol man tapped the discs near the calipers , this freed them .Cant believe i managed to get the rear wheels spining and it didnt do anything yet a couple of sharp taps in the right place and it is sorted.Took the car for a spin and to begin with the braking was really juddery it took a while to get the discs and pads clear but its fine now.The wheels where coated in brake dust and fine rust particles when i got back . There was no way i was going to clean them and then put it away, lesson learned i will just have to use it more.
