Hi, what's the fastest speed someone has been caught at in the UK – bike and car stats if possible ?

I was also wondering what speed the best UK traffic police cars max out at ? I presume they have heavily “breathed” ones - do they derestrict the 155Mph max on German saloons ?

PC Milton was clocked doing 159mph in a Vectra, whilst he 'tested' it.

A guy who was a work acquaintance alledgedly held the highest UK speed up to the year 2000 apparently, I've never researched it, but it was backed up by several other people I knew. Either a Hayabusa or similar sized bike, M20 at over 170. He did say that it was showing 190 at one point.

He'd panicked after seeing the blues at about 130-140 and was 2-3 Junctions away from home, so thought he'd run, rather than be sensible. Result, went off at next junction, into roundabout, dropped it (considerably less than he had been travelling), bike writes off car entering roundabout, he gets flung down the road, and hits car himself, albeity luckily a huge distance from when he hit the ground and he wakes up in hospital 2 weeks later.

I forget the outcome, but it naturally, was pretty bad, I seem to recall a 3 odd year ban. And I don't think he's too light on his feet anymore.

Edited to say I have actually bothered to read Jazzy's post, and sound pretty similar, si I might be right, my memory isn't what it was.

I reserve the right for anyone to find that it all bollox, but I've no reason to disbelieve him.

IIRC 193mph on the newly opened M1 in an AC Cobra in the '60s. Plod could not prosecute as there was no NSL at the time but it did make page 1 news.

But obviously he was not speeding as no such offense could be commited at the time.

170 lost sight

I read the first four lines of that and thought of two words:

Nick Freeman

I was right. He certainly earns his keep on £4000 a day. It must be said though that on the two occasions I have represented myself against traffic violations, despite me being an 'amateur' I was an expert on the law regarding my case and how it is represented compared to the CPS solicitors.

To his credit though, it shows when you can afford the 'big guns' the CPS pea-shooters dont really have a chance. So in the same way the OJ Simpson case was won, when you can afford the best, you can buy your own justice.

So 173 is the record for a non-conviction so far... what about the highest for a conviction?

The fastest speed that i know of was a chap on a Fireblade Southbound on the M1 in the early 90's.
He was doing 153 and got a ban coupled with Community service.

There was a biker about a year ago that got put away for 3 months? Can't remember the speed but seem to recall it was near Amersham on the A41.

Scott

I remember those bikers getting nicked on the Tingewick Bypass, a legendary stretch of road in my circles. I received a number of phone calls after the bikers hit the news from chums laughing at how slow the bikes were nicked at... I can't possibly comment on the "reference speeds" to which everyone was comparing.

I seem to recall a Fireblade rider in Scotland getting pulled for 178mph about 3-4 years ago.

If I recall, the car record falls to the guy from Japanese Tuning company Top Secret when he blatted that 1000bhp Supra up the M1 a few years ago. I believe he was clocked on the wrong side of 190, although it was claimed in Max Power that he went faster than that? There was video of it on the net at the time.

In any event I can't believe the fastest a car has been nicked is under 160mph.

His Stack dash display had recorded a peak of 194mph. He was charged with 135mph and deported.

Sorry Nigelo, but a 60s Cobra cannot achieve 193 mph, they top out at around 150-160. Bricklike aerodynamics saps all the power. Also the gearing would not allow them to reach that speed.
