Question for the Ladies - Nails
Discussion
As a life long nail biter, I would like to treat myself for Christmas and get some false nails done (sorry, artificial nails)
As I have never had this done before, I am a little confused and am hoping that someone can help me out.
What are the differences between acrylic and gel? which are better and which last longer? And what sort of price am I looking at? How do I look after them?

Ahh but having falsies over the top stops the biting (so I'm told) so it's a good idea!!!
Having said that I don't know anything about false nails - sorry....I'm sure someone else will
It worked well for a friend of my niece - she'd always bitten her nails but had false ones fitted. She liked the way her new nails looked so didn't bite them (also not the same satisfaction I'm told!!) and that helped her to break the habit so that once her own nails had grown back underneath she'd got out of the habit of chewing on her fingers.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Hi
been having mine done for years, for gods sake don't go to a salon that used drills, many of the chinese/asian ran salons do, they are trying to make the drills illegal in this country now as in America, they use a machine similar to a Dremel drill, they use this to take the top layer of your nail off so, supposedly, they have a clean base to start with, but you should never, I repeat never file the top of your nails, this leads to infection and possibley gangreen, a friend of mine used to have this done in these types of salons and when she soaked the nails off her real nails were like jelly, she was in agony and couldn't even put her hands in water. The salon should only lightly buff the top of your nail for a base for the glue to stick too. Have a good look around at the salon choices and then make a decision. I love mine, and acrylic tend to be better than gel and last longer, the best (if you can get them) is fibre glass. Hope this helps

Wow, I didn't know that about the drill, that sounds scary!
Thanks for the input, gonna go into town either today or tomorrow and see whats on offer.
I am a nail biter too, and love the false ones, your own nails grown underneath much better with the extension rather than buying the cheaper (full nail) and sticking them on yourself which are ok for temporary use. Good luck and enjoy your new nails K

I had mine done for around a year at an establishment that used a drill, naively unaware that this was v. bad. When I felt that I had got out of the habit of biting my nails I had the false one removed only to find my real nails were so weak that now, another year later, they still break & split at the slightest excuse. This morning one split whilst I put a pair of gloves on!!!
So I end up still nibbling.
Still the false ones look great on our wedding day & in the photos
Well have phoned a place near me and spoke to the nail technician and explained myself to her, she does acrylic and sculpting (wow, that sounds posh), has promised me that she will not do them too long (they would not be strong if they were apparently) and it's only gonna cost me £25, I think I am having tips and sculpting and am booked in for 9am tomorrow.

Excellent, sculpting is great, did you ask if she used drills? And yes the length does affect the strength esp if you have short nails underneath, as your own nail grows you will be able to have them a bit longer (God I sound really mumsey!! Sorry
) Hope the advice is useful K

I find every time I have mine done, they buff the nail with a block, and take away all the skin at the base of the nail, leaving my fingers bleeding!
What really upset me was that they cut your own nails really short, so I had spent ages getting mine to a nice looking length then they hacked them off again! (I was getting them done for a special occasion)
Have been wearing them 16 years, started off with silk wraps, then to fiberglass, acrylics, now gel - which for me is by far the best, but it depends on the oiliness of your nail bed, most salons use several different types of extension, and they shoudl recommend the best for you, as opposed to the most expensive.
Mine are by calgel, which is organic, and lets your natural nail breathe underneath, and I pay £40 for a full set, and then £20 for infills every 2 weeks, I need a new full set every couple of months, but that is because my nails peel away underneath, so I need fresh tips - a lot of people can get away with only having one set of tip extensions and once their natural nails have grown underneath just continue with the gel overlay for strength.
Most gels are the same stuff that they use to make false teeth with, which gives you an idea of the strength.
I would recommend having them short to start, and then if you want them longer you can keep them longer. They grow out with your natural nail, so it's a gradual getting used to long nails that way.
Need to have 'infils' to back fill the gap every 2-3 weeks, which depends on the speed your nails grow.
Good luck!

Flippin eck, I really am learning something new today, should post more of my early morning musings!
I do want them pretty short to start with (well I'm not used to nails) and also am thinking of wearing my contacts over Christmas and that's no good with 2" long talons (eyes watering at the thought!)
Hopefully I'll be able to type tomorrow when I get back form the beauty shop! lol
Thanks all for your advice and help.
