So the missus brings the 996 home last night having apparently mastered the art of running an engine on fresh air but still can't fill it up herself!

Pop out this morning to do my bit for G Brown's balance defecit by filling her up and my local Esso has ran out of Super Unleaded (and there's not a Shell, BP or Tesco 99 station for miles around). Ended up putting Sainsbury's Super Plus in and she seems to like it.

Anyone else tried it or know anything about it?

...and it was 86.9p per litre which ain't too bad! well of course it's actually daylight robbery, but by comparison...

Used to put it in a bimmer I had. No problems that I was aware of until I sold it for an EVO - and she didn't like it (didn't feel as gutsy.) Since then I've been an Optimax fan.

Theoretically supermarket brand SUL is ok, as they are 97-98 RON, but they lack a lot of the cleaning agents and additives that Shell and BP use. This is why they are dearer. It all comes from the same refineries, but sainsbury's et al keep it cheap.

I would say its better than 95 RON, so ok to use in a pinch, but try and stay away if you can - just my opinion . . .

Check out the latest issue of Evo. Lots of useful details on this in there.

From time to time I'd run a few tanks of Sainsburys super through the RX7 I had (usually towards the end of the month when 9mpg was taking its toll!) and it seemed fine although not as much kick as Optimax.

Thanks for the info, she still runs great so I guess the stuff is basically OK. I do like to put Optimax in but nearest Shell takes me half a tank to get there and back (especially if I go on the more fun roads! ) which makes it kind of impractical so I guess as said its better than 'regular'.

Out of interest, how many folk put 'super' in as a matter of course and how many stick to regular? My 996 is 60K miles with 3 owners - for all I know I may be the first one to put super in it....

I always use Optimax (or occasionally BP Ultimate or Tesco 99) in the tt, usually plain old Shell 95 in my 'tank'(volvo).

my 996 shows no noticable difference, I try to keep with the super if availible but somtimes there is no option and she seems to be fine with the regular stuff, note I only put BP or Shell regular in her though, not the supermarket stuff.

I get better mpg on the super though. . . .
