After a damn good thrashing.....
Discussion
.......I get a really bad vibration (metal on metal) from the exhaust just behind the bulkhead. What possible reason could explain the cause of this. Another nice noise is a clicking from the nearside front brake disc. If you depress the brake pedal then it dies. Must be a bird stuck in there somewhere? Any ideas?

Apparently I may need an anti tizz bracket for the exhaust.
Why didn't Lotus fit one of these as standard? For the love of god, didn't they test these cars?
Exhaust "tizz" is normally when cold and for what it does, probably not worth the hassle of fitting.
I get the feeling you're not enjoying the whole Elise ownership thing?

It is certainly the cause of frustration at the moment. Not the sort of car that you just get in and thrash every day and expect to hold together. Questionable integrity and as a mechanical engineer I am almost embarrassed that someone would hold their name to it. Don't they have a QA department running at 6 sigma level in Norwich (and suppliers)?
I researched ownership prior to buying and wasn't prepared for what I received to be honest. Spoilt with German build quality for too long it seems.
Anyway, the noises only happen when the car is very hot. As for being able to hear it, it is right behind my head!!
I have had an elise for 2 years now - apart from a minor leak on a gearbox oil seal, the car has not given me a moments hassle. I spent thousands on my beemer M3 though. Different sort of car. I bought it for the smile it put on my face (it still does every day), but elises are not for everyone.

I don't think these are worth it - some have said they're all right, others have said that they are a total waste of time and money. If it's right behind your head then it's not the exhaust (which is to the rear of the car). Loose manifold or something perhaps? Seeing as you're in Surrey why not pop along to Lakeside and ask them to give it a once over for you?

He's got a clicking brake pad and a noise from the engine bay FFS, it's not his coming out party!

Don't know how anyone can hear anything in an Elise, with a hardtop on the engine could be dragging on the ground and I woulden't hear it
Eh? I sold my hardtop because with it on the resonance from the exhaust and induction was FAR worse than with the soft-top.

Im going to use the Xmas break to strip some of the back of the car down to try and get to the bottom of the vibrations.
I don't want an S2. Too luxurious for a single minded car, would rather a Boxster. I also prefer the shape of the S1.
I removed the airbox last night and replaced the pipercross filter that came with the car. I channelled the air intake such that it faces the filter. The induction noise is now much more realistic, borderline mental! The only problem is that it is even more wheezy now and doesn't pull as hard. I checked the spark plugs and without a doubt, they have never been replaced. Could the fuel filter need changing as well? I can only assume that the injectors are also clogged up, etc.
Nice little weekend job!!

The clicking on the brake could be something is loose, just jack up the car and turn the wheel around by hand and listen where it comes from.
I once had a terrible hammering sound on the right front disk! very scary soud and what you think was the problem? I had to put locknuts on my wheels and I had to shorten them a bit, but still one seems just 1mm to long! and hits the brakedustplate on 1 point very close behind the wheel/disk
and that part is a bit flexible and sounded just like a thin steelplate in the wheel of a bicycle(when we where kids to make a sound from their bike) GTRene

anyway back to the question in hand
I presume you've checked its not the undertray vibrating before you strip the car back to its component parts?!
Clicking from the brake could be a stone stuck between the splash guard and the disk, remove the wheel and just flex the splash guard out and see if any stones fall out.
Simple answers, I like that.
Original airbox with K&N went back on last night as it sounded crap with the Pipercross. The sound reminded me of my old Mk2 Escort with a blowing exhaust at full revs.
I banged the undertray last night whilst looking under the car and it seems that this is the source of the noise. WTF can you do about it though??

There are the size 8 headed bolts all around the undertrays that connect the undertrays to each other. There are also two allenkey headed bolts (5mm iirc) more centrally located on the undertrays - usually the rear one is the culprit. They do work loose and even if marginally loose, cause a vibration that will drive you nuts.
Quick solution - park the car with 2 sidewheels on a kerb, crawl under with an 8mm spanner and no 5 allenket and tighten everything under there. Even better, use a cordless screwdriver. 10 min job max.
Not meaning to be funny though, check under your sear=ts for eg loose coins - they can cause a huge racket when you drive.
