I'm not in the position to afford to build an Ultima and more importantly I have no mechanical skills. This may sound like a truly daft question but given the money, can anyone build an Ultima (ie me with no skills in that area). I am just smitten with the idea of building a car with such a pure philosophy.

Yup, I did You only need basic tools (spanners etc) and a good riveter (for putting in rivets!). We also found a double garage very usefull (rather than single).

For the most part you assemble Ultima's rather than build them. This is because everything has been designed and manufactured to fit perfectly first time.
You will need more DIY type skills than motor mechanic skills.

Thanks for the replies, its good to know you dont need to be a mechanic to assemble one. For the less skilled person, what sort of timeline would it take from start to completion.

600 hours build time. If we built another could easily do it in 400.

Getrag, I think the most sensible answer is, you can build it as fast as your bank account and freetime will allow.

So a year or just less is a good mark? I dont suppose anyone was brave enough to calculate total cost

Have a look at this MS Excel spreadsheet. (430k). I created it early last year with help from the Ultima Club South East organiser, Darren Gosbee.
