My guess is that you're on a tripod here. The wide open with converter doesn't look sharp, and it is presumably not camera shake. But is it just not focused on the plane of the object?

TC's are known to cause softness when a lens is wide open - what's odd is that it's soft at f2.8 without the TC on the camera.

How abut making that to Sigma and seeing what they say? They're very helpful.
