A Friend at work who's Husband was convicted of drink driving and lost his Licence, Livelihood etc was saying today what a good Idea the French have, apparently if convicted over there and losing your Licence you are given a "White" Licence that allows you to just drive to work and back so you can continue doing your job, is this true? as it seems a bit weird if you ask me

It used to be the case. I had a white licence for 2 months after a speeding ban, so I could drive during working hours but not in the evening or weekends. Damn near turned me into an alcoholic, coz my wife drove back from every night out!

They have done away with this system now in their attempts to reduce the carnage on the roads. Quite right really as it wasn't much of a punishment, though I can see the point to avoid people losing their livelihood due to a ban caused by speeding.

After doing some research on French sites this is what I found out.
It all depends on how fast you were going over the speed limit.

You get:
1 point for being less than 20Km/per hour over the stated speed limit.
2 points for between 20/30 Km/h
3points for 30/40 Km/h
4 points for 40/50 Km/h

Up to 6 points and 1500 euros fine for being 50km+ per hour over the speed limit, confiscate your car and sell it at the auctions , and you can't apply for a "white licence" for work, with a possibilty of a 3 years ban.
