Just bought a new laptop and Vodafone are offering a free 3G/GPRS Data Card with every Intel-powered notebook purchased whilst the offer is running (see here).

If you go for Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) data costs £2/Mb which is pretty steep, but ok for light usuage I guess. If you go contract it is £25 for 250Mb (ie. 10p/Mb). That's a hell of a difference in price.
I've gone for PAYG as I really don't know how much I'm going to use it, but since it works on Direct Debit rather than top-ups, I'm going to have to watch the costs like a hawk to make sure I don't end up paying more than £25 (which is only 12.5Mb at the PAYG rate). I guess many people won't, which is how Vodafone are going to make their money.

hehe 12.5mb break even :| thats like half an hours emails ;(

3G is defo the way ahead.. I look forward to the day a useful sized flat panel PDA phone comes with 3G, Terminal Services and SSH built in.. will make life much easier..... or will I just be tied to the 'virtual desk' for longer :|

I do fancy 3G on the laptop, just for those times when I am stuck on a train somewhere.. whilst GRPS is .. ok.. its not exactly 'fun'

Will look into getting one of these on contract I think.

I have a vodafone Nokia 3G phone and it comes with software that allows your laptop to connect direct to the internet via bluetooth through the phone. Dont even need to be in a 3G area as it will then connect through standard WAP (which is slow) but allows some browsing and smaller emails without attachments to be sent with ease. No need for a dial up connection and you get billed in a similair way as you would with the 3G card.
