Hi

I have just got the port decanter out of the cupboard to refill it for the yuletide festivities and I then remembered that the last time I cleaned it I couldn't get rid of the port residue from the inside of the decanter...

I have tried soaking it with hot water and a bendy brush and even put it in the dishwasher... but alas no luck....

Does anyone have any top ideas to clean the inside of a crystal decanter

you need magic balls :-)

they're brass coloured small ball bearings you swirl around the inside of the decanter. Should be able to get them from a kitchenware shop

I think dried rice works as well. I seem to remember that from an episode of how clean is your house.

Mild vinegar and warm water solution - swish it round a bit.

Depending on the port, it shouldn't be in the decanter long enough for it to stain. The better the port, the quicker it needs drinking as it goes off quicker. No help on the cleaning issue, but just a pointer for future .

Act the man and drink it quick !

Despite the age, it never lasts more than a sitting in our house anyway

If at least three people are partaking a decanter should almost last one meal. Along with the rice you could try a mild bleach solution.

Amazing, I've been thinking of posting that Q for some time (red wine is my culprit).

A tip for drying the decanter is a coat hanger opened with 1/4 of a tea towel tapped to the end...if its ot dried properly you'll still be left with residue.

class!

Back on topic, try baking soda standing for a few mins and a rinse afterwards with lemon juice and water.
