Anyone done it? I know touchingcloth is having his done at the mo.

I'm planning on doing this between now and LeMans 2006, don;t want to use the car for a while and as the PS needs doing I though I could do this at the same time ( a little drastic but heyho!)

A friend of mine knows a guy who can coat it for me. His bike frame and bits cost £250 so I reckon I'm looking at £800 tops sent down with the chassis bare.

Looking through the manual it doesn't appear too bad a job.

Seats and dash out, fule tank out, discconect loom from engine and coolant hoses, disconnect steering and you're away.

Hiya chap - Guess a lot comes down to abilities with the old tools and having the space to work in. Luckily my skillset (if you can call it that ) most definitely lies elsewhere so it was never a job I would ever dream of taking on myself, unluckily however the labour will be the largest part of my costs by a long way. There is a biggish thread running on the Chim section, not sure how different they would be as jobs but chassis are fairly similar throughout tvr's as I understand it so may give an indication of things to consider.

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=215696&f=8&h=0

What I am learning is that once you have started there is no going back and this is where the costs can start to mount - any small thing that you come across when it is in bits it will make sense to sort, my wishbones for instance are fine in reality but whilst they are all off it seems sensible to finish the job and get these coated at the same time. Also you will more than likely have at least one area of the chassis somewhere where some proper work fixing it up will be required and not just strip blast and coat. The good thing is that you are right to tackle it - it is better to get it done rather than burying head in the sand and thinking it will be fine, from what I have heard recently it is all too easy to go past a refurbishable point and you are then looking at complete new chassis or possibly a car that has more value in bits.

Cheers for the link.

Luckily I have a tandem garage (very long) and so should make the job relatively simple. Also working in the automotive consultancy trade helps a little.

Will have a good hunt round it and looking at the worst problem areas i.e. the front of the rails behind the front wheel it looks pretty solid.

If you can get anymore shots of yours and particular akward jobs that occured I'd be ever so grateful!

IIRC Steve Heath (PH: shpub) is doing/has done this. ??

The Cerbera body removal is not as straightforward as the two-seaters. At some point my '98 car will need this so I'm all ears (eyes even) on this thread.

Hi , I have done a few and it is quite a bit of work , even the rear seats have to come out so you can remove the seat belts and part of the inner cill has to be cut away to clear the chassis on removal. The last one I had powder coated cost only £450 and that included zinc coating as well , Dave

I'd have thoought the main difference would be the built in roll cage on the cerb.

I'm doing this on my own at the moment - took me two days to get the body off, and thats using little more than axle stands and scissor jacks!!! All you need is space, at least a size and a half garage minimum, an array of tools and then time to work on it. As plasticman says, there are a few issue to work around that aren't in the manual e.g. it took me a while to figure out I had to cut a tiny bit of the sill away to get the chassis outriggers to drop free, but apart from that the manual covers just about everything. My 4.2 engine is also totally dismantled at the moment, and I'll be rebuilding that in the New Year. I've had the chassis blasted - luckily no holes at all, although a lot of surface bubbling - and then coated in zinga, and then powder coated on top in a lovely anodised blue colour. I'm getting it back on Sat morning and will post some pictures soon. Had all the ancilliary bits done too, e.g. water pipes, roll bars, bracing plates and wishbones/hubs. Thing is with a job like this, you always find other stuff to do as well, e.g. replace all the crappy TVR budget hoses for braided/silicone items, and new poly bushes all round. I'm also taking the opportunity to go to 330mm brakes, 4.5 front anti roll bar etc. The engine is being blueprinted as well, I shied away from the 4.5 upgrade as there were too many other unknowns and I wasn't prepared to risk getting it wrong. A LOT of work, but boy it will be worth it.... And the real peach is you learn so much about the car - and how bloody simple it is!!! In future, if anything breaks I'll have a damn good idea of what it is, so the whole issue of risk/expense will be removed, making the whole TVR experience much much sweeter. Have loads of good chassis and engine pics, someone care to expalin how to post them up here??!! Merry Xmas to you all by the way!

Sounds to me like there is a good business opportunity for someone to offer a specialist service for TVR chassis restoration.

..and doesn't attach at all on the rear (no rear triangulation). This surprised me!

I know, silly isn't it. Still might be a giggle and I'll probably just use them for the car shows I go to next year.

Pretty sure it'll drive horrible on them.

That did look like a cock up - he had the same wheels and similiar wheels wit a £1500 reserve price elsewhere.
