Please help me.

I'm trying to install Menalto Gallery on my webspace. All has been uploaded OK so far. Trying to run the installer, and I can't get past step 2. I understand this is due to my PHP safe mode is still on.

OK.

Please can someone who knows about these things advise me how I can turn this off, so I can finish the install. (If it helps, I use Lycos for my hosting)

Bear in mind I'm a dunce & it's taken me ages to get an FTP program & get this far...

All help will be gratefully received.

Thanks, Chris

Can Lycos not disable the Safe Mode?
Most problems I have with PHP are usually caused by some kind of restriction by my Host.

Dave.

Yep just looked on this Menalto Gallery website and it says:

PHP - PHP version 4.1.0 or greater, PHP safe_mode must be turned off

So just give Lycos a bell, or look in your account settings and you should be fine

Aaah Hah - do I need to call Lycos then?

or is there some script / code / ? that I upload to stop it?

I'll call Lycos & ask.

Many thanks

Chris

Yep, think a quick call or email towards Lycos should have it fixed. As far as I know it is the bloke on the other end that controls the PHP Safe Mode.

Aye, Safe_mode is a PHP server setting. If you're host plays ball, its not an issue.
I;m surprised at the number of hosts out there who wont disable safe_mode tho. We run all the new VDS's with safe_mode off, but it doesnt make much of a difference as the Gallery software is 'quick install' anyway.

If they wont disable it, you might end up looking for a different Gallery product that doesnt require safe_mode off (tho most need it off for image uploading / renaming)

Jamie, looks like you'll be getting my business soon.

I am still waiting for Lycos to respond regarding the PHP issue.

I wanted to move the hosting & domain to you, but they won't let anything move within a 6 week window before or after renewal

As soon as this is up - I'll be in touch!

You can still move the hosting, you just need to change the nameservers from Theirs to Ours.

We can then just process the domain transfer once the 60 day window has expired.

Just check you can change DNS servers (or even DNS records), then place an order for the VDS and I'll ensure the rest gets done our end.

I'll speak to them again, but the lacky on the call centre was adamant that I couldn't move anything within 6 weeks of domain renewal - they actually insisted I had to renew my hosting package to enable me to move away!!

Sounds like Sales BS to me.

There is no technical reason why a Nameserver modification can not be made to a domain at ANY time except when it has expired.

Its true you cant transfer a domain within the first 60 days of ownership, but thats about the only restriction that comes into mind.
