I'm ready for my mid life crisis - which 911 ?
Discussion
but am a porsche virgin, have a couple of cars to sell and a lease that ends in march so now I can seriously start to look.
I want to use the car for everyday to and fro, average annual mileage c25k.
I have used PH forums before and found them to be populated by a mixture of individuals who really are physical examples of care in the community by the way they talk about their cars and well informed people who know what they are talking about.
Hopefully I can get some thoughts from the latter. Former for amusement as well I guess
Budget 30k tops dont like Boxters - subjective styling decision so which one do you think is best for me?

Go on then, I'll recommend a 996 C4 just to give the 993 C2 tribe someone to argue with!
In an ideal world I'd have both - but I can only afford one and it has to be the modern, PSM equipped, more modern of the 2.
But then 993s have that magic that is certainly 'diluted' in the 996....
Ah but my aircon works in my 996...
Then again, 993 sounds better...
...but the 996 can be driven easily by the wife (not necessarily a plus point!) whilst talking to the toddler and trying to change the CD at the same time...
although the 993 sounds far nicer...
oh I don't know, drive 'em all and fall in love with one!

If you're intending to cover 25K per year then go 996. The alternative as somebody else suggested is get a 993 for pleasure and a cheap saloon for everything else.
BTW I have a 993 but it's one of four cars,so I only use it when there is some prospect that the journey is going to be fun. On a cold winters night when I am travelling with the sprogs on a long trip I'd much rather be in my 5 Series.

I'd say Porsche and second car, 25k is alot for any sports car and will hurt big time come re-sale.
I'd say ignore the 'practicality' of a 996. There's room for a degree of irrationality in a mid-life crisis. After all what are the choices...a skinny blonde with big t!ts or a 993 Carrera C2S? I opted for the latter. I'm certain this choice has resulted in less GBH of the earhole at home!
I feared the mileage might be an issue its a downer, the upper is that 2006 will come without the possibility of "GBH of the ear" so sod it, 996 it is.
Have looked at 911virgin.com - any thoughts or views on the best source - I dont trust my own mechanical expertise.

Buy the car from anywhere you like (autotrader.co.uk is a good start) but get it inspected by someone who knows 996's. If not an OPC, then one of the well respected independant lot (i keep hearing Peter Morgan's name come up).
Basically, find a car you like and then spend a couple of hundred quid finding out what's wrong with it (if anything).
Upside if you get an OPC inspection is that you can then get an OPC warranty...

Forget 996....go 993 or 964 , if you dont trust yourself like the guy says get it inspected but i dont think ''Henry'' @ 911virgin would even think about selling you a nail, hes a good guy !!and ive had some respecable deals with him , hes not full of bull , tells you how the car is and explains the car 100% bang on if calling via telephone - in my eyes Highly Recommended !!

The 996 is the better car in any rational analysis. The 993 is the emotional choice.
You'd buy a 996 with your head, a 993 with your heart.
Me, I wouldn't have a 996, I own a 993. I've driven the 996 and I respect it, but I could never love it. If I had to do 25,000 a year in the 993, however, the love afair might start to wear a little thin.
Second cars are fine but you could end up spending all your time in the 3k runaround, 'cos it's easier to, and not using the weekend toy enough to justify keeping it. If going down that route, I'd be tempted to spend 15k on a 330d as the daily driver and 10k on a 911SC instead.
What do you drive now? What have you owned in the past? Which of them did you like most and why?

Two cars, an absolute given,
My old Audi for the 18k/yr I do, and an old 964 for the weekend sir. Suits me....
kevin.
I agree. I keep my 993 for pleasure outings, but the wife's Honda Civic does most of our mileage - straightforward, reliable motoring that doesn't give me any worries versus sheer delight that sometimes has me thinking about residuals. However, I can't imagine life without that buzz.

It's quite obvious that the only reasonable choice for you is an early 2wd 993.
Anyway, we're not all that bad, I mean, hell, I hardly ever wash my car FFS. Can't be that anal, eh?

have owned Caterhams, TVR's all of which have spent far too long in the garage needling me, and depreciating. The issue of doing most miles in a 'nail' doesnt appeal, that was the whole point - something to provide best smiles per mile and compensate for dull time in a car. I suppose I should just go and get my arse in gear, earn some more money and then widen the choice window.
Have driven a classless chipped VW Golf tdi 150 for the past three years. Great for not taking the pi$$ out of clients but dull.
Grrrr
