I switched to the RAC when I was given a years membership for free. It was only basic cover and lacked home start, so the first thing I did (in a big hurry) was ring them to upgrade to full cover.

me: Hello, Id like to add home start (whatever they call it) to my policy.

them: Card details please, etc etc etc

me: Sorted, thanks very much, cheers!

Then one day, the cerb wouldnt start. Hello, my car is on the drive, wont start, how quickly can you get here?

them: Sorry, you dont have home start.

You w*nkers!?! But I phone you ttheads in January and upgraded my account right after I signed up, what do you mean I dont have cover!?!

I had no choice but to upgrade the account again. Following which, they came out, picked up the car, and took it to dream machines

Several months later...
me: Hello, girlfriends car is on the drive, needs to be picked up...

Them: them: Sorry, you dont have cover.

WHAT???

Its interesting that they came out after I upgraded the second time, but dont have a record of me having upgraded. I told them to check the address the car was last picked up at, you'll find you came to my home!! They confirmed they came out, but said their computers didnt specify the address

Anyway, I received a letter from them today, thanks for the custom, you are due for renewal next month etc etc.

Im going back to the AA. Lets just suppose though, that I was one of the people who could be arsed to write to them, with a formal complaint. What would I get in return, and for my custom, and their cockups? Probably an apology if I was VERY lucky, but these days, you're unlikely to ever receive more than that from a company of their size. It leaves you pretty pissed off, that anyone can get away with anything, but even more frighteningly (have yo noticed?) they always do! And as a society, we do nothing about it.

Well thats my last rant of the year and breeeath

Last time I roasted the RAC I got 6 months free cover after they charged me to recover a camper a few miles on the motorway, even though it was well under length.

Always worth a punt, no one is infullable.

This type of thing seems to happen to me ALL the time. I'm seriously going to start taping my phonecalls to these type of organisations....

They did almost the same thing to me. One year they just failed to renew the full recovery option on my membership. I get stuck in the middle of nowhere in a 309 GTi with a blown headgasket and an RAC man asking for a credit card so he can recover me.

I told the RAC man to sod off and used my passenger's recovery. I've now switched to Britannia.
