I know this should be simple, but 3 hours in, i'm not having much luck.

I have 2 PC's connected to one router via ethernet cables. All I want to do is to be abel to share the files between the 2 PC's (from either PC).

How does one go about this?

I take it you have allocated each machine a unique IP address?

192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 should work fine, assuming the router is 192.168.0.1

Then turn off all software firewalls for addresses in the 192.168 range this will ensure that traffic can be routed freely internally.

Where are you specifically getting stuck?

I have statically assigned ip adresses, and one of the PC's will see the other when I do search of other computers. However, when I try to map a network drive or 'open' that connection it gives me some BS about no permissions.

I have set this all up fine on my own PC (and my ipaq, wirelessly) but on my parents no such luck...

I bet you are using Windows XP - make doubly sure that the native firewall has the option to allow sharing of files and printers ticked (network properties, advanced, settings, advanced...)

Or if that's inconvinient, when you map a drive you have the option to connect using a different user name, and you can enter the other machines user credentials there.

When you login to XP does it ask you for a password? If not then you are probably using blank passwords. By default XP does not allow blank passwords when mapping drives. There are 2 workarounds for this:

1) Create an account on each pc with a username and none blank password and map the other machine from it with these credentials.

2) Allow blank passwords for file shares in XP:
Go to Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy.

Expand Local Policies/Security Options.

Open Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only. Disable this item and click OK.

I would prefer the first method as it is more secure.
