Heard this (or something very similar) on R4 this morning:

'A centimetre of snow has fallen overnight in the East and with a further inch of snow possible today police are advising people to stay in their homes and only travel as absolutely necessary'

Does anyone else find this riduculous? Granted I'm from the north where driving in 6" of snow and navigating iced lakeland passes is de riguer, but a few bloody centimetres?

Next we will be being told that there is a strong possibility of there being a nasty nip in the air and we should wrap up warm before leaving our homes. Or worse 'autumnal warnings' to advise that an impending change in the seasons may result in fallen leaves increasing the probability of slipping underfoot.

Where will it all end...

Went down the M1 yesterday to Leicester.
As we joined the M1 from the M18 I remarked to Julie that it was 'perfect incident weather'... low sun and a fine spray off the road.

Sure enough a few miles further on we had to queue for an incident just south of the A617 junction.
Turned out to be TWO incidents, apparently unconnected, about 1/4 mile apart. The southbound one involved 17 vehicles and the northbound seven.
You could see that virtually every one had run into the back of the car in front; classic driving-too-close scenario compounded IMHO by a damp road, the low sun and spray masking brake lights.

Wish to christ I could predict lotto numbers with that much certainty...

This is the only time of year when I am nervous about driving. It is the time of year when the unenthusiastic non car-interested numpties are on the roads when normally they would be at work. For about the only time of the year they are driving at an unfamiliar time on an unfamilair route.

You will see more shunts and more broken down cars than at any other time. You'll se more bad driving at this time than any other.

The Police might be right - perhaps their advice is aimed at those of us who like our cars and our motoring. The underlying advice is:

"This is the time of the year when the numpties in their masses take to the roads. They have only the thought of what bargains are to be had at the Sales, and are incapable of applying any thought or knowledge to the act of good driving. The best thing the rest of you can do is stay indoors."

You're totally right and I witnessed loads today, just got in from a 150 mile trip and the main problem is the numpties, lack of awareness and the inability to indicate before pulling out to avoid nothing infront of them

Ive just driven down from Yorkshire and a journey that would have normally taken just over 3 hours actually took 6. The amount of accidents was rediculous. Plus of course everyone had to stop and look, not only at the accidents but people who had broken down and been stopped for speeding.

Unbelievable.

Well you may be right.... If so why don't the authorities issue a 'numpty alert'?

The Beeb could have great fun with it: numpty quotients, animated maps showing streaming up to date numpty traffic flows, interviews at the scene, a bit of historic context - it could be very entertaining...

Not very PC though, ho hum.

We're expecting my folks tonight, the've been stuck on the M25 for 2 hours and no snow in sight.......

It has to be said I have a certain tendency to regard this sort of statement as a challenge. Like "Unsuitable for motors" signs.

We have that here (New Jersey) the Govenor has the power to create a state of emergency. It's not abused though and it's usually for more than a sprinkle, it allows the snow plows to get out and do their job unimpeded. Typically at night, or if the snow is excessive.

Not really, my wife gives me the snow shovel and sends me out to find the newspaper which may or may not be somewhere on the front lawn under x feet of snow.
