--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trying to make up my mind on this, opinions appreciated. The car HAS TO BE TIP.

996tt. For: 420 BHP,can be modded, 4wd(I like that), always wanted one, comes loaded, can have them for circa £55k for a good one now, since it has to be tip 420BHP will help.

Against; Its the outgoing model. Can't really think of anything else

997S Tip For : I get to drive a current shape 911, interior better, better driving position. The looks have really grown on me and now I love the way it looks. Newer car with OPC warranty no matter where I buy it from. Test drove one and loved it

Against; Not many 997s tips with spec I want in my colour to choose from. Price is £62- £65k, so up to £10k more, and budget is tight.

So which one should I go for? I'm particularly interested in which one people think will depreciate more over the next 2 years. The tt will cost £52k 01, £55k 02, and about £60k for 03 from indies. 04 997s will cost min £65k for right spec

Merry Xmas to all Phers!

Have you test driven a 996tt? If you do that then I think you will have your decision.

Haven't driven the 996tt! Problem is its not that easy getting a drive in such cars if the dealer thinks you are not there to buy that particular car but on a fact finding mission. What do you think about the depreciation issue?

Well, both cars will depreciate but the 997s will depreciate more since it's a new car.

Or will the tt devalue more as it starts to 'age' and look dated, where as the 997 is new and in demand with many people wanting to buy a second hand one? Have I got this all topsy turvy?

The TT has already depreciated by 40% so I think there will be a bigger hit on the 997 over the next 2-3 years.

I left a reply to your question on Stuttgart9. Most important point to consider from my experience is how you feel about the looks and aesthetics. Both are great to drive and both feel 'quick enough' for most people, but some people (like me) have been surprised how difficult it was to feel passionate about the 996 compared to previous generation 911s. I tried 3 times and failed. The 997 however feels much more (to me) how a Porsche should feel and also feels expensive, which is something I never felt my 996s ever really felt.

Totally agree. The 996 is looking dated from the outside and the interior has always looked like a parts-bin special from the 80's.

I too tried both cars (996tt and 997s) and they are indeed both "quick enough". The 997S also feels quite a bit quicker than my old 996 C4S and feels much more special.

It also looks more modern. The interior, so far, has not fallen foul to the cacophony of seemingly unsolveable rattles and squeaks that plagued my 996.

This is a good thing.

Whoami, I take it from your response you have a 997s? If so is it tip or manual?

Thanks

I'd go for the 996tt myself, more car for the money and I reckon it'll depreciate less.just my opinion but I prefer it to the 997.

I do have a 997s. It's manual though so not what you are after.

With tiptronic, surely the torque of the turbo will do more to flatter the gearbox?

On the styling front, thats your choice. Frankly the 996 TT is a lot better looking than the spy shots of the 997 TT

Absoulte no brainer for me mate, 996TT all the way. I'd wait until the 997TT comes out for any further softening of prices.

The big big difference is the engine - its a pukka dry sump Porsche engine in the TT. It shares the bottom end with the GT3 developed from the GT1 race car. It does not suffer the engine failures and RMS leaks that the other 996, 986 and 997 engines do. Ask an opc tech who has your interests at heart and he will only point you one way....These things aren't internet forum myths, i've seen and heard at first hand about the number of engines they scrap.

Just my 0.02, maybe biased because i have a really good mate who's been an opc tech for over 20 yrs, he will not let me buy any non air cooled engined car thats not a gt3 or TT.

Cheers and good luck

Ajit.

Thanks Ajit. Though I understand your point, the used 997 would still have some warranty which I would extend, and so Porsche would pay for the engine! Would be a lot of hassle though!

I have a 996TT, and have never driven the 997S so won't comment on the drive.

In other respects of interior / exterior, it is all personal choice of course, but in my subjective world I think the interior of the post 2002 996 is best porsche has ever done and much more attractive than the 997. I have always thought the current fashion for aluminium trip was a bit 'halfords'.

The flip side is that IMHO the exterior of the 997S looks fantastic. I know the changes are subtle for most, but even so they amount to a very pretty car.

I am not going to be swapping my TT though !!

Completely agree.

Build quality in the 997 has advanced significantly over the 996. I consider the gap equivalent to that of an Audi vs. a Renault, as far as the interior is concerned and some aspects of the mechanicals too. I know comparing a Porker to a Renault is heresy in some quarters but that’s my honest experience.

Surely if all you are concerned about is a beautiful interior a DB9 would be a more rational choice?

Ah but the 997 TT isn't under consideration, and if it looks like the spy pics boy has someone been busy with the ugly stick! 997S is far more attractive and so is the 996 TT (all imho).
